Every member of a friend group holds a particular role which helps said group stay together and thrive. Even though every friend group is different, many of these archetypical positions are universal. "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" is a TV show with many colorful characters that can help perfectly demonstrate these roles which we all somehow fit into.
The Wildcard
Charlie Kelly (aka "Dirt Grub") is The Wildcard of the group, being the most unpredictable member of the gang. His crazy antics provide humor to his friends, while also giving him a sense of purpose in life: entertainment. The wildcard may have hidden, unexpected talents; Charlie, for example, can play the piano, sew and paint. The wildcard keeps the squad on their toes and adds the charisma your group needs.
The Looks
Dennis Reynolds serves as The Looks of the friend group. He is considered objectively the most attractive of his squad and therefore uses his appearance to benefit not only himself but the hijinx that him and his friends get into. One time the guys were trying to get a loan to start a gasoline delivering business, and when it wasn't going well Dennis ripped off his shirt in hopes that the female banker would suddenly approve their loan. While it is completely possible for the looks to be a smart, well-rounded person, the "archetypical looks" is vapid and self-centered.
The Muscle
Ronald McDonald, known to many as Mac, is The Muscle of the group. In his eyes, he is the protector of the squad, even if nobody else views him to be. Although it may seem like he does what he does to assert dominance, his intentions are pure. He is compassionate and does what he does to keep the ones he cares about most safe. Whether he's standing up for his friends when they're being mocked or he's "assessing a threat," he's there for them. The muscle of your group will always be there for you.
The "Wise" Older Friend
There's always that one member of your squad which is noticeably older than the rest, whether it is one year or 20, the older friend serves as an authority figure of sorts. Frank Reynolds is The "Wise" Older Friend of the group. He is the father of Dennis and Dee, and joined the gang in order to reunite with his estranged children. As seasons of the show have went on, Frank has become progressively more reckless. Because of this, his already resentful children get to witness their jerk of a father simultaneously destroy his body and his dignity. The older friend serves more as an example rather than a teacher, despite what that friend might think.
The Older Sister
Finally, we have Deandra "Sweet Dee" Reynolds, The Older Sister of the group. She's not actually older, but serves as the naggy voice of reason in most situations. She constantly yells at the men around her for acting idiotically, but in return she is nonstop tormented by the rest of the gang. She serves as a verbal punching bag for the people around her, but she toughs it out because in the end she feels responsible for her friends' happiness, even if it's at her expense. She is also extremely competitive and a very sore loser, constantly striving to be #1. The older sister of your gang may seem overbearing, but they do what they do out of love...and to assert their dominance.
If you've never watched "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia," I highly recommend that you do so. But if you have seen the show, whether it be a couple of episodes here or there or the entire series, you know that this gang is as dysfunctional as it gets. But as crazy as they are, they still stick by each other through thick and thin, and that makes for a good squad.
