Spring Semester, I Hate You

The semester that ends in the blink of an eye.

Spring Semester, I Hate You

The rumors are true, spring semester does fly by 100 times faster than the fall. It might sound like the most desirable situation as a student, but believe me when I say it’s not. In some instances, it’s almost the same feeling you get when you’re about to graduate high school.

Everyone’s so ecstatic for a new chapter in their life to being, but at the same time sad that one that they’ve enjoyed so far is coming to an end. Take “senioritis” and multiply it by a thousand, I’m talking next level laziness.

I’ve always felt guilty whenever I’ve skipped a class in the fall semester, but during the spring there’s no doubt that I’ve slept in a few times here and there. I’m sorry mom.

I never really understood why part of me was in denial to others who had already experienced this feeling, but it was just something I never wanted to accept. The end of spring semester meant the end of freshman year and for some reason, I am terrified of what the future has to hold.

Adulthood is real and life is hard, so I’m genuinely trying to be a kid for as long as I possibly can.Don’t get me wrong, I’m welcoming summer with open arms, but once summer begins so does responsibility.

The environment in college is unexplainably different, especially the spring semester environment. At first, everything seems like it’s taking forever to start back up after the much-needed winter break and then exams hit you like a bag of rocks.

However, everyone is a lot more spontaneous during the spring semester. I can’t even begin to count the number of times one of my friends just randomly left for Florida, or Tennessee, or even Arizona for the weekend. I’m all for spontaneous adventures, but this entire semester I felt like I was constantly drowning in assignments and mandatory meetings.

Also, is it just me or does anyone else feel like signing up for classes in the spring semester is the most stressful thing they’ve ever had to do in their entire life? I can’t even begin to explain the frustration of not being able to take a class that you need for your major, because of it hitting capacity. Life just seems easier as a freshman, besides the whole not actually an adult till you're 19 in Alabama thing.

It’s also weird that the only break we actually get during the spring semester is spring break. Why is that even legal? I’m surprised that no one has started a petition to make spring break longer, because a week is not long enough. If we’re being real, it feels like the motivation to do work is at an all-time low and the amount of parties goes through the roof.

I’m all for having a good time, but it seems as if there’s a party every single night of the week. I will never understand the concept of going out on a Monday night. But, maybe that’s one of the things that will come with getting older in college.

Even though there’s nothing that I can do about my last semester of freshman year coming to an end, it’s nice to know that I’ll have the same support system as I’m adjusting to sophomore year.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
