6 Reasons Spring Quarter Will Be The Best Quarter Yet (I'm Serious!)

It's finally that time of the year, the time of year when the sun is out earlier than 9 in the morning, people start wearing fewer layers to stay warm, flowers are in bloom, and the world gets some color back-it's spring time! There are so many reasons to love this time of year, and these are just a few reasons to have in your head to stay positive while also needing to be in school during it.

1. English 101

If you go to Western, then you know how hard and frustrating it is trying to get into English 101 as a freshman for the fall and winter quarter. But, when spring quarter comes around, all that stress goes out the window when the elusive class finally opens up for us. Honestly, for me, that has been one of the best feelings I have ever had in my entire life, and it couldn't have happened without spring quarter, so that is one of the biggest reasons in my book for why spring quarter is the best.

2. Studying Outside

When I think of college, one of the first things I think of is students outside studying on the grass with their friends. This image becomes a reality for all of us during the spring quarter. Yes, you can do this during fall quarter as well, but the fact that spring is after winter (the worst season) makes it so much nicer because you have not been able to do it for months. Being able to study on the comm. lawn or the old main lawn while also getting a tan and enjoying the sun rays is really all that a Western student could ask for, right?

3. The Rose Garden is in Bloom

My favorite part of the WWU campus is the rose garden by old main. It is so so beautiful and seeing it become beautiful again after winter quarter is just such a nice and uplifting sight for me and probably (hopefully) a lot of other students. If passing a pretty rose garden on your way to class doesn't put you in a better mood, I don't know what does.

4. The Sun is Out

Everyone is noticeably nicer and happier when the sun is out. You can just feel the positivity everywhere on campus coming from everyone and it is such a great feeling. Even if classes are stressful, students still seem not to have a care in the world and it's fantastic to be around that energy. Good weather puts people in a good mood, and after winter quarter, it's very refreshing and so nice to see that change.

5. You Can Wear Cute Clothes

For me, I never know how to dress cute during winter quarter. Especially in Bellingham, you're almost always just going to end up wearing jeans and a raincoat. But that changes with the spring quarter. You can wear skirts, shorts, tank tops, t-shirts, dresses, sandals, anything you want.

6. One step closer to summer

Quarters fly by so fast, and once this one is over it's finally summer time! The best season without a doubt. You can go swimming and tanning and hiking and bike riding and basically do anything you want. There is nothing to worry about and it's just the best. Spring quarter is the gateway to that and it makes it that much better.

So, there you have it, spring quarter is really the best. Obviously, it doesn't beat summer, but while dealing with classes, this is as good as it gets. I hope you all enjoy your spring quarter and be as positive as you can because that will make it so much more of an enjoyable and happy time.

11 Things Summer Nannies Can Relate To

There are plenty of obstacles that come when taking care of kids, but it's a very rewarding experience.

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

There are a lot of really easy, common names in the U.S. and while many of those simple names have different spellings, most of the time, pronunciation is not an issue that those people need to worry about. However, others are not as fortunate and often times give up on corrections after a while. We usually give an A+ for effort. So, as you could probably imagine, there are a few struggles with having a name that isn’t technically English. Here are just a few…

Daydreaming

day·dream (ˈdāˌdrēm/): a series of pleasant thoughts that distract one's attention from the present.

Daydreams, the savior of our life in class. Every type of student in the classroom does it at least once, but most cases it is an everyday event, especially in that boring class -- you know the one. But what are we thinking while we are daydreaming?

Puerto Ricans. They are very proud people and whether they were born on the island or born in the United States by Puerto Rican parent(s). It gets even better when they meet another fellow Puerto Rican or Latino in general. You’ll know quickly if they are Puerto Rican whether the flag is printed somewhere on their person or whether they tell you or whether the famous phrase “wepa!” is said.

If it hurts now, it'll hurt again. Not because you're gullible or naive, only because you fall fast, hard, and you do it every time.

We fall each and every time with the complete and utter confidence that someone will be there to catch us. Now that person we SWORE we were never going to fall for has our hearts, and every time we see them our palms start sweating. The butterflies in our stomach start to soar and our hearts are entirely too close to bursting out of our chests.
