Being single doesn’t seem to bother many people 11 months out of the year. The only exception being the month of February, which is a dreadful month for those who are riding solo, but it doesn’t have to be. As February approaches and the sight of red hearts, chocolate, and "I love you" greeting cards fill the aisles of almost any store you walk in, it has me thinking: is this “holiday,” known as Valentine's Day, as fake as the red rose that every gas station in America is selling this month? Don’t get down on not having a significant other to share this superficial holiday with because being single this one month of the year isn't any different from the other 11 months. If love truly exists, shouldn’t it be recognized and appreciated just as much during the other 11 months that make up a year? If you're single and you think the only way to spend Valentine’s Day is in your bed accompanied by every Ben & Jerry’s carton the supermarket has to offer, while watching "The Notebook," and questioning why Noah hasn’t magically appeared in your life... CHANGE OF PLANS.
Being single is a privilege, so here’s to a day where we can celebrate our freedom!
1. Host a f*** Valentines day party!
Call all your single ladies and remind them of how blessed we are. I live by the famous "Sex & the City" quote, “Maybe our girlfriends are our soul mates and guys are just people to have fun with.” So make some of your favorite snacks, grab a bottle of wine (or a few), and spend the night with the people who love you all 12 months of the year.
2.Treat yourself to a day all about you!
Since Valentine’s Day is all about “love,” what better way than spending the day loving yourself? Hit up the nail salon, maybe even the spa, and treat yourself to a day all about yourself by yourself.
3. Make Valentine's Day cards for those in need!
There are worse situations in life than being single, and it's important to remember that. Get your arts & crafts supplies out, create Valentine's Day cards, go to a nearby children’s hospital, and do something that will brighten someone else's day.
4. Take your dad out.
For many, the first guy you ever loved just so happens to be your dad. He is the prime example of all the qualities you look for in a man: he supports you, encourages you, and wants nothing but pure happiness for you. If your parents are together, your mom has spent countless Valentine's Days with him, hopefully, she won't mind if you steal him for a couple hours. Take your dad out and thank him for the standards he set for the man that will magically appear from the sky one day.
5. Clean out anything & everything that has to do with your ex
I know that his hoodies are most likely the most comfortable ones in your closet, but it's time for them to go. It's hard to not think of the player who turned your heart black when you’re in his sweatshirt. Get a black garbage bag and throw out the past.
It's time to turn that frown upside down, because this year on February 14th, we're celebrating all those independent girls who don’t need a man by her side to conquer the world.
