Sound Chaser | The Odyssey Online

Music has always played an important role in my life. Both of my parents are musicians and over the past 20 years, they have done me the favor of introducing me to a variety of genres and artists.

I had heard songs from the band Yes over the years as it was my dad’s favorite group, but I had never paid attention to the lyrics of their mystical music. I was prompted to look closer at what this group of men sung about for school and discovered a rather amazing message within the song “Sound Chaser”.

There is nothing to say that this was the message they intended, but I believe that the beauty of music is in the eye of the beholder, and the most amazing thing about it is that you can make it yours.

Although it was not asked of me to analyze each line of a song, this is what I found myself doing. I was inspired by what I unveiled and can only hope that you will be too. I ask you to please first read the lyrics without looking at my interpretation. Try to make sense of it, and then look over what I believe is being conveyed.

“Sound Chaser” by Yes

“Faster moment spent spread tales of change within the sound, / Counting form through rhythm electric freedom Moves to counterbalance stars expound our conscience / All to know and see the look in your eyes. / Passing time will reach as nature relays to set the scene, / New encounters spark a true fruition, / Guiding lines we touch them, our bodies balance out the waves / As we accelerate our days to look in your eyes. / From the moment I reached out to hold, I felt a sound, / And what touches our soul slowly moves as touch rebounds. / And to know that tempo will continue / Lost in trance of dances as rhythm takes another turn, / As is my want, I only reach to look in your eyes.”

“Sound Chaser” Interpretation by Cara Tomlinson

The past is the past, so use music to explain what has passed, recalling those times with the emotional and thrilling freedom of rhythm. Change is good, though, because finding something that balances or completes you helps develop your conscience, which in turn makes you a better person and ultimately helps you reach an ultimate understanding.

Time will pass as the world changes, and the decisions we make lead us to new endeavors, accomplishments, and individuals who trigger this true self-fulfillment and fundamental understanding. As humans, we must accept what life throws at us and we do so very carefully yet unknowingly as each day passes. With each challenge of life and each acceptance of these challenges we are getting closer to reaching the ultimate and complete understanding.

Ever since I embraced life and all of its challenges I have felt completeness. This completeness means to wholly understand that the reflection of humanity gradually changes as time passes but that the rhythm of life will continue and endure so greatly that it is almost dream-like, as it has no restrictions. As the tempo of life shifts yet again, my only desire is to reach this complete understanding.

I am not religious and I am unchained in my beliefs of the world around me. There may be religious undertones in this song or my interpretation and there may not be. Once again, music is what you make it. For me, this song is telling me to embrace life, every single part of it. If I can do this, I will be at peace with this world and myself. An ultimate understanding may differ from person to person, because it is your ultimate understanding.

Here's to facing challenges, accepting changes, and accomplishing a complete understanding, whatever that may be.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
