A Letter Of Appreciation To My College Soul Sister

When it comes to friendship, sometimes you just know.

A Letter Of Appreciation To My College Soul Sister
Samantha Shepherd

One Friday in late August, I met the girl that would be my soul sister. Neither one of us knew it then, but I could not be happier that I said yes to going for barbecue that night. When we got back to campus after a night of fun, we put the dorm room mattresses on the ground and laid on them. Jack had left to call his parents and I was stuck with two people I had just met in the room of someone I had only met a few days earlier. Looking back now, it was probably super awkward and I totally should have just left after about 30 minutes of me just sitting there with you and your boyfriend at the time laying next to me in silence. But you know what? I am beyond thrilled that we were able to get past the awkwardness of the situation, start the movie and set us down the path that we are on today. You are my best friend at UNT, Kouressa, and here are three reasons I know this to be absolutely true.

We have each other's back. Anytime, day or night, I know that I can count on you to be there and vice versa. When we don't see each other for 24 hours or more, I feel empty and I have to talk to you! You are my shoulder to cry on and the one that makes me laugh. Thank you so much for making your way into my life. You worried about my birthday this year and if I was going to have a good one, and it was probably one of the best birthdays I have ever had because I spent it with you! You have become my rock and my sunshine. You are the best friend I have made at school and I hope to have you as my friend forever.

You are just as in awe of the world as I am. First off, you have a wonderful music taste. Second, we gawk over the same shows, celebrities and funny fandom references. Third, you have this wonderful outlook on life that inspires me so much. Whenever I am having a dilemma or speaking faster than I can think, you are there with exactly the words I need to hear! You have this air about you that is so kind and magnificent. You are the sweetest person I know and I can talk to you about anything. I cannot wait to see how our friendship will grow and flourish with the more time we spend together.

We are always up for each other's antics, whatever they may be. Want to celebrate the Chinese New Year? Shelf shopping? Want to take a road trip back to my hometown to see a play? Want to spend literally the entire day together, then have a sleepover and spend the majority of the next day together and not be tired of each other? We write poems in Google docs, literally finishing each other's sentences. Mr. Frosty? Late-night Walmart run? Want to go with me to pick a friend up from Love Field and spend the day in Dallas getting lost searching for coffee in Deep Ellum? Your first In-N-Out burger? "Deadpool"? "I am so excited!"

We are like Bert and Ernie, Tom and Jerry, Hans and Chewie, Holmes and Watson, Mac and Cheese, Simon and Garfunkel, Ben and Jerry, Monica and Rachel, Lane and Rory. One day, someone is going to write a book about us and we will be on one of those top 10 dynamic duo lists. I love you, girl, and I am so happy that I get to call you my friend.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
