Thank You Best Friend
Alaina Wyrsch

My best friend is currently 80.4 miles away. That’s 141,504 yards, 424,512 feet and 5,094,144 inches. Although this may not seem far to some, to us it's like opposite sides of the world. From seeing each other basically everyday for four years to suddenly being apart, it has not been easy. But the thing that is so amazing about our friendship is that we can make it work wherever we are. My best friend may be far, but we have never been closer.

My best friend is my other half. She makes the good parts about me shine and the bad parts somehow be hidden. She knows every little thing about me, and I her. We know what each other are thinking before the other even has a chance to speak. It’s crazy to think that we have only known each other for such a short time, when it has felt like a lifetime. I always love going back to our freshman year pictures and looking at how far both of us have come.

Best friend, thank you. Thank you for shaping me into the person I am today. Thank you for being my shoulder to cry on when things got tough. Thank you for being there through it all, no matter how crazy things got. You have been there through every monumental moment in my life as well as all of the little moments. Thank you for dancing with me in the car and for going on random adventures. Thank you for being my soul sister. Thank you for being my best friend. The way that we get each other is so amazing, it’s like you’re my other half. I can’t imagine ever not having you in my life, so you’re basically stuck with me. You're the Kendall to my Kylie, the Blair to my Serena, and the Meredith to my Christina.

I am so sad that I don’t get to see your face everyday like I did in high school, but I love our snapchat and FaceTime dates. I am so beyond proud of you, and I love watching you succeed in college. You’re going to do great things in this world, and I can’t wait to come visit you wherever life may take you. I have never had a best friend like you, and I know our friendship is one that will last forever. So here’s to you and to our friendship. I look forward to many more years of memories and laughter to come. I love you, thank you for being my best friend.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

There have been many lessons learned.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
