10 Things Being In A Sorority Has Given Me
Alex Todd

Coming to college we are all in search for a community, whether it be within our major or building a group of friends to love and support you. I am very blessed to have friends involved in greek life as well as outside of it. When I came to Tech I wanted the opportunity to find a group of like-minded individuals who vow to stand firm with one another, celebrate highs and wallow with you in your lows.

I'm happy to say that I have found that within my greek community. However, being a part of the greek community has given me so much more than a community. It has grown my leadership abilities and taught me what it means to carry out the ideals of high standing women-hood, the very principals the greek community was founded upon. Here are the 10 things being in a sorority has shown me.

1. Leadership growth.

All women involved in greek life are leaders with no doubt. However, being apart of a greek affiliated organization has grown me as a leader and taught me that I'm not done growing.

2. Having a mentor is important!

Every good leader is still being trained and taught. That's why it's so important to find people you look up to. Not only are these girls your sisters but your motivation to continue to grow and learn.

3. Constant support.

Let's face it. We have all traveled XYZ miles to come to school so we might not see our OG support system as often as we like. Having a group of girls that you all call the same home away from home, "home," is so important.

4. Time management.

Between study hours, classes, chapter, extra curricular's, and having a social life, your planner is your best friend. When going greek you slowly become a well-rounded women who is slowly but surely not always running 15 minutes late.

5. Friendship.

These are the girls you will eat queso until you explode with. These are the women who celebrate every milestone you concur on your way to success. These are the girls you can't picture doing life without.

6. A place to belong.

Like I stated in the intro, we all want a community. Finding women who want the absolute best for you and welcome you flaws and all, is so refreshing.

7. Networking.

Once you find your forever home it is literally your forever home. Once greek always greek, having these connections with sisters and alumni sisters is so helpful when leaving the safety net of college. We, as greek women, all want to see each other succeed even during the job hunt.

8. A chance to shine.

Age is only a number in the eyes of your sisters. When it comes to sorority life you can choose how much or as little as you want to be involved. However, everyone is given the opportunity to share their vision for the chapter and sisters yet to come.

9. Goal setting.

We all have dreams and ambitions, we have all set some sort of goal for ourselves. However, having a multitude of accountability partners to help you achieve that goal is huge!

10. My forever home.

Like I mentioned earlier, having the ability to call these women your sisters for life and knowing no matter where life takes you, you will have a support group, is big.

Going greek is so much more than the cute t-shirts and a resume booster. Becoming apart of a sisterhood the greek community offers has shaped my college experience in such monumental ways. I would not be the growing women I am today without my sisters.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
