If you've been pondering over the idea of beginning the hit Netflix series Black Mirror you should definitely take a look at my top ten ranked episodes (with a few songs you should add to your music library based on each one!).
10. The National Anthem - Pressure by The 1975
The first episode of the show is a great introduction to the entirety of the series and its underlying theme of technology and the human relation with it. Although it is suspenseful, compared to later episodes this is only the tip of the iceberg. A member of the British Royal Family is abducted and unless the country's Prime Minister is willing to partake in sexual intercourse with an animal her life remains at stake. In comparison to the 1975's song off of their freshman album also titles The 1975 both the song and episode deal with pressures of being in the limelight and consequences of public recognition including vulnerability and lack of privacy.
9. The Entire History of You - Everything You Want by Vertical Horizon
Here is another Season 1 episode that follows Liam a married man who becomes suspicious of his wife's loyalty after attending a dinner party as he learns that her old fling is also an attendee. A "grain" implanted behind his ear allows him to unravel the truth behind his worry as it allows for all recorded video and audio of memories to be rewound. Everything You Want deals with a one-sided relationship where one partner may be perfect for the other but is never fully appreciated, making up a strained relationship or one that never works at all reflective of Liam and his wife, Ffion's, characters.8. Be Right Back - All I Ask by Adele
Now this one's a heartbreaker. The First Episode of Season 2 follows Martha and Ash a couple torn apart by tragedy. When Ash dies in an accident Martha is faced with an overwhelming amount of grief that she can't seem to handle. This leads her to subscribe to a service that simulates a similar version of lost loved ones. She soon realizes that she will never get the "real" Ash back even though she tries everything within her means to fill the void left behind by his passing. Adele's hit song All I Ask is similar in that the person wants to hold on to a love one last time even though they know it won't be there tomorrow.
7. San Junipero - I Would Do Anything For You by Foster the People
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE. Black Mirror can't seem to get enough of this reoccurring theme. In one of the series most critically acclaimed episodes of the series (which won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Television Movie) introduces Kelly and Yorkie who meet in virtual worlds. Kelly helps Yorkie come to terms with her sexuality as Yorkie helps Kelly decide how she is to spend the rest of eternity. Foster the People's song off of their TORCHES album expresses how one would go beyond limitations for love. The track could be reminiscent of a few couples in this series, but best reflects the plot between Kelly and Yorkie.
6. Hated In The Nation - Pumped Up Kicks by Foster the People
Both this episode (Season 3, Episode 6) and the song deal with more sinister undertones. Multiple murders are connected to government-controlled drone bees as well as a series of hateful social media hashtags toward despised individuals among netizens. Mystery entraps the entirety of this episode keeping viewers engaged an on their toes much like the hit 2011 track Pumped Up Kicks that deals with a young boy named Robert that hides grim plans for those around him.
5. USS Callister - Mr. Sandman by The Chordettes
One of the most comedically refreshing episodes of not only Season 4 but the complete series USS Callister introduces Nannette, a new employee at a gaming company. All is well until she wakes up on a spaceship where the crew seems oh so familiar, though the circumstances seem all too different. The episode relates to the classic Mr. Sandman as both the song and episode deal with the archetypes of omnipotent creators and ideal versions of people.
4. Shut Up and Dance - Oh Devil by Electric Guest
3. Nosedive - Fake Love by Drake
A somewhat brighter episode of the series follows Lacey, a woman who lives in a society where everybody is rated by a social scale. In attempts to boost her overall social ranking Lacey links up with an old childhood friend for her wedding when things take a turn for the worst. Fake Love describes this episode so well as the lyrics uncover how many of those around you often put on a facade in order to be seen as something they're not. Do people actually like you for who you are or what you have?
2. Hang the DJ - Panic by The Smiths
Another lighthearted episode of the series depicts Frank and Amy, two young adults who decide to try out a dating app that finds the perfect match 99.8% of the time. Panic's lyrics exclaim "hang the DJ" due to the same song playing over and over again much like the many simulations that Amy and Frank are put through time and time again to see if their relationship is actually worth it. (The song is also featured in this episode as well! See if you notice!)
1. White Bear - Me by The 1975
This entire episode is jam packed with suspense and mystery and is one that'll definetly keep you on your toes. When a woman wakes up with amnesia she is forced to fend for her life as on lookers record her every movement as attackers attempt to execute her. Me by the 1975 deals with looking into oneself and coming to terms with one's actions as they affect those around them. It deals with different perspectives of hurt much like that of White Bear.
