Songs to Kick Off Second Semester

Second semester is here, and it’s time to get yourself pumped up.

It’s hard to get back into the swing of things after being away from school for a month (I don’t know whether to hug your or be mad at you, Lou Anna K; East Lansing has been a ghost town) so here’s some new songs to start your second semester.

1. "Can You Feel Me Now" by Flint Eastwood
This song is perfect for pumping yourself up before trudging through the inevitable snow. I know this is all just a trick, Michigan. The tundra is on it’s way. Flint Eastwood is a great band from Detroit, and I recently had the chance to hear them live. Thanks to my roommate and best friend, I got to hear them at Mittenfest, and they definitely bring the energy. I couldn’t stop dancing. This song will pep you up and possibly get you walking faster, because let’s be honest, no one wants to walk through the snow.

2. "Need Ur Luv" by Charlie XCX
Everyone has heard of Charlie XCX by now, thanks to her hit "Boom Clap." A majority of people, especially frat guys, can sing her hit, and I think it’s time she gets some more recognition for her music. Definitely check out her album, "Sucker." The song I’ve been playing on repeat would be the last track, "Need Ur Luv." It’s a great song to blast while you’re getting ready for a night out with your sisters or your friends.

3. "Mother and Father" by Broods
"Mother and Father" is one of those songs for when you’re feeling independent. It’s all about growing up and wanting to be your own person, and starting second semester, that’s probably how you’re feeling. Broods is a brother/sister duo from New Zealand and they just released their debut album in 2014. "Mother and Father" is my favorite song so far. I definitely recommend checking them out.

4. "Run" by San Cisco
I need music to work out to, and San Cisco delivers a great, upbeat song for hitting the gym. You need some music to start your New Year’s resolution, right? Even though the song is nothing about running, just the beat alone gets my heart pumping.

5. "B*tch Look At Me Now (Two Weeks)" by Childish Gambino
Shout out to one of my best friends, Lucas, for introducing me to this song. "Two Weeks" by Grizzly Bear has been one of my favorite songs for the longest time. It’s one of those songs that I just keep going back to, and with Childish Gambino rapping over it, it’s even better. It’s definitely an old one, but a new discovery for me

6. "Style" by Taylor Swift
Okay, I will admit it. I actually really love Taylor Swift’s album, "1989." I used to be filled with a lot of Swift hate, but now that she’s embracing pop, I’m all about it. I fell in love with the song "Style" after the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, and it’s one of those songs that I find myself singing over and over. "Style" is a song that makes me think of Friday nights with my girls, dancing on tables and flirting with cute guys. It automatically puts me in a good mood, and I’m sure it will never go out of style (sorry for being incredibly cheesy, but it’s true).

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

The Importance Of Being A Good Person

An open letter to the good-hearted people.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
