Black History Month is sadly one of the shortest months, but when it does roll around, I am so excited. I always look forward to hearing the accomplishments of black people from around the world and how, throughout generations, have continued to have such an amazing impact in the lives of people everywhere.
One of the best ways that I like to celebrate is with music. Music is a special type of magic that lets people convey a multitude of emotions that are known throughout the black experience from our struggles, sorrows, and aches and pains to our pride and our resilience and our love.
Whether it's listening to old school hits from legends like Nina Simone or James Brown to the tunes of today from icons such as Janelle Monae and Kendrick Lamar, black people have painted their lives and stories with music. So, enjoy this list of songs that have been pieced together to commemorate the hopes and dreams of Black History Month.
P.S. Please do not sing the n-word unless you are a person of color whose ethnicity has been subjugated to hundreds years of oppression, violence, and systemic discrimination that still continues to this day. Thanks!
