This past weekend, I saw the true spirit of what being Blue Streak really means. Friday night, I went from a date dance with my sorority to an event held in our student center by the people who put on alternative programming every weekend. This big event held all throughout the student center involved food, crafts, animals, inflatables and music. I took a look around at everything going on, and stopped by and watched a few of my friends in a band playing in the atrium.
The kid singing started out talking about how we are in our glory days right now and sometimes, we just don't see it, before singing the classic Bruce Springsteen song, "Glory Days". This cliched statement resonated somewhat with me for many reasons.
As the band closed with their final song, another crowd favorite, the Semisonic song "Closing Time," my friend turned to me and with all the enthusiasm in her voice exclaimed, "I just love John Carroll." I looked around, seeing the crowd that came out to support these guys, a number of people socializing and having fun in the student center, and the pure joy on everyone's faces, and the energy and excitement the guys in the band had, and I realized it. This is what it means to be a Blue Streak.
Everyone says their school has that one something special, and I obviously do not know one way or the other, but John Carroll definitely has that. Other schools have certain traditions and stories that set them apart, and we have family and heart that set us apart. We are together as one and we look out for each other. We are a family, we are friendly, and we all care.
Of course, most schools could say that, but there is something different about it here. I may never be able to describe it to a tee, but that indescribable feeling and emotion is exactly what I mean. There is something indescribable about it, it is just a feeling like no other.
It may not be all about the sports, or the Greek Life, or the parties, or anything like that here; it is just about the people. There are no other people I want in my life next to me when I face tragedy or immense joy, or standing next to me holding my hand during the Our Father in Mass. I just want me fellow Blue Streaks.
All in all, John Carroll as a school forms you as a person. You become a better person either due to the people you surround yourself with, or the events you surround yourself by. I feel so strongly about the fact that I am already five times the person now that I was a year ago, and I owe it all to this school and these people.
As the song came to an end, sweat dripping down my face from dancing so much, I looked around me and I realized, if I had never before, that this is not just a school for four years, this is home.
And finding that home with that family is what makes a Blue Streak.
