This is written as a response and explanation to a video that Casey Neistat (a popular YouTube creator) posted in the middle of September about Joe Rogan's podcast episode with Elon Musk - found here: THAT ELON MUSK INTERViEW and the dangers of VLogging
In short, Casey Neistat is a major content creator that often likes to discuss interesting information or announcements in connection with social media and technology.
I've always been a big fan of Neistat's work on YouTube. His posts are often intelligent, thought-provoking, and motivational.
Instead of basing this video on his own words or thoughts, however, he decides to do a kind of response to the podcast episode that has exploded recently in meme culture online - the Joe Rogan interview with Elon Musk.
Joe Rogan is a comedian who currently hosts a podcast called "The Joe Rogan Experience" and Elon Musk is an engineer and businessman who works with multiple large technology companies like Tesla and SpaceX.
Before watching Neistat's video, I had only vaguely known of Rogan's existence in the podcast world because "The Joe Rogan Experience" was usually trending when I was looking for something new to listen to.
Musk, on the other hand, I was more familiar with. I knew of his connections with Tesla and other tech companies, his brief flame-thrower hobby, and I followed him on Twitter out of sheer curiosity a while back.
In his response video, Neistat emphasizes how funny the Rogan/Musk interview is. He tells the audience multiple times to find time to watch the entire podcast episode — notably almost three hours long.
I started watching it despite the length. It's not too bad so far, but it's definitely more awkward and cringe-worthy than I was expecting.
During the interview, Rogan and Musk discuss the future of technology and the effects of social media; they use Instagram as an example.
Neistat highlights a few specific parts of their discussion in his video and adds a brief overview of his own opinions on the topic of the future of social media.
He highlights the two following quotes from Rogan and Musk:
1) "Comparison is the thief of joy"
2) "Happiness equals reality minus expectation"
With these two ideas in focus, Neistat explains the conversation going on between Musk and Rogan about this topic. He reaffirms that our social media presence is merely an individual performance put on by each person online.
Instead of telling his audience to completely avoid media like Facebook, Instagram, or YouTube, Neistat just urges us to be more conscious and aware that social media does not accurately portray reality.
This is exactly why I loved watching Casey Neistat's videos in the past; he's realistic and aware in his expectations he sets for the interaction of his audience.
While the interview with Rogan and Musk feels forced and unnecessary, I'm glad that it spurred a response by Neistat specifically.
