So You've Chosen To Be An Education Major

With so many of us, the true purpose of our degree can get lost in transit.

So You've Chosen To Be An Education Major

If you're an education major, I'm assuming you like being around children, or at least, I hope so. There are definitely the people that are just in for the easy "A," but what they fail to realize is just how difficult the actual job can be. They're in for a rude awakening when they are finally in a classroom of seven-year-olds that don't know how to read.

If you're anything like me, you've definitely had your days in which you cannot stand the people in your classes and you feel like you're losing IQ points. Some of the classes are pointless and trivial, but some truly do push you to think about education and how you can change it to be better. Some of the best people you'll meet will be in those classes, and you will regrettably meet some that should potentially consider changing their career path. Even through it all, something about teaching children keeps you enthralled or keeping you from changing your major.

I'm one of the lucky few who has known since I was six that I wanted to teach. Something about children draws me to them and I truly enjoy the thought of having a hand in their education. However, as all education majors know, it isn't all fun and games. The chances of you getting a fantastic job right at the beginning of your career and being able to teach whatever you want rarely happens. We also understand that the education world tends to be extremely political and all about who you know and what they can do for you. However, it all pays off in the end.

For those of us farther in our degrees, we also know that sometimes children just aren't going to like us. There are days we consider giving it up and switching our major to have an easier job. However, at the end of the day, when I'm thinking about changing my major and all the other job possibilities I could explore, I realize that I still want one thing: to teach. Nothing makes me happier than seeing a child's face light up when they've finally mastered a concept and everything isn't so confusing. It's moments like these that remind me just what I signed up for and why.

All the education majors out there know the struggles of actually teaching, despite it being considered an easy major. For those of us that are actually in it to make a difference in a child's life, we really don't care what others think about our major. It's going to be us teaching your children one day, so maybe give a damn about us while you still have the chance. Don't disregard us as having an easy major and tell us how much harder your classes are, because we're going through the same thing, maybe just at a different time. For everyone who is an education major, I'm proud of you. It's people like you that keep me striving to reach my goals and pushing to do my best so that I have the chance to make a difference in a child's life. It's to you that I say, thank you.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
