"Snot-Nosed Kids" Can Worship, Too

Life is simple and sweet in the eyes of a child, no matter the circumstances surrounding them.

"Snot-Nosed Kids" Can Worship, Too

Kids these days don’t get enough credit. They’re looked down on for being small, immature and young. "Snot nosed munchkins" isn’t an uncommon name used to describe them, and expectations for them seem to only decrease. But what if I were to tell you this upcoming generation is the start of a revival we desperately need?

I just spent a week helping lead 8- 9- 10-year-olds in worship. Their worship was so pure and genuine. They didn’t know to be scared of the other kids around them. They didn’t know to care about what people thought about them raising their hands and giving their everything to God. They didn’t know to analyze. They didn’t know to question. They simply lifted their hands and praises in surrender to their Heavenly Father. All they knew was God is good, so they praised Him for it.

“Truly I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven” Matthew 18:3-4.

Humility is a vital thing in the life of a Christian. When Christians begin to think we know everything there is to know about God, we refuse to dig deeper into finding Him. Our arrogance blinds us from the whole truth. Children humble themselves. They’re teachable. They’re hungry for more knowledge and understanding, and they aren’t afraid to do whatever it takes to gain that.

Sometimes I think we adults think we know too much in areas we don’t know anything at all. Kids don’t try to know the why’s and how’s of worship, they accept what God knows and they follow. We could learn so much from them. With complete surrender comes deeper understanding.

Kids are so simple. They don’t complicate life as much as adults do, and that’s a blessing in disguise. Kids see things at face value rather than analyzing them to a pulp. Life is simple and sweet in the eyes of a child, no matter the circumstances surrounding them.

Because of this, kids can be a perfect example of what faith looks like. It’s easier for them to believe the promises of the Lord because they don’t question Him. They don’t come up with their own plans, like we adults do, instead of following the Lord. They follow Him simply because they know that’s what we’re commanded to do.

The Lord is clear in scripture in commanding us to have a child-like faith: humble, simple, sweet and obedient. We desperately need to reach a point where we stop analyzing and simply have faith. Lift your hands in surrender to God without worrying about the person beside you. Praise Him with your heart without taking control. Follow Him where He leads without questioning. It’s simple. God is God and we are not. Follow Him as a child would.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
