Small Town Living - What Is It Really Like?

Small towns can be defined in a number of ways, including people, area, size, number of houses etc. Some are full of livelihood while others are dull. Some are close communities and others not so much. But one thing is true about living in a small town: It's a one of a kind experience (whether that's good or bad). A handful of people grew up in the city or suburbs and have never witnessed what would be considered “Small town living”. So what is it really like you may ask?

Well, here's my take on it:

1. You Know Everyone.

Living in a community with under 5,000 people, I have learned that I pretty much know or have seen every. single. person. Whether its at the grocery store, out for a walk, or at the local bistro, unless a family has just moved here - there's about a 99% chance that you know them.

2. Everyone Knows Everything.

Jacks dating Sue, Sarah's pregnant, Kevin broke his baby toe - whatever it is, you will know….and so will everyone else. When you live in a small town, news spreads fast, and because everyone knows everyone, it makes it so the entire town finds out about even the simplest of things.

3. Its Pretty “Cliquey”.

You might imagine that on Christmas morning the whole town gets together and holds hands, while singing in a circle as done in the Grinch. However, that's not the case. In fact, the town is so small that a bunch of small groups form - if your not in one of them, there's a good chance that you won't be. For the most part everyone is friendly, but not everyone are friends.

4. Life Has a Slow Pace.

A lot of people that live in a small town move here after retirement, or when they are looking to start a family. Why? Simply because the lifestyle is simple and slow. There is no nightlife, no bars, and really no form of entertainment. It's very quiet and the most exciting part of the week is the Monday morning traffic which consists of a steady flow of 10 cars. The days just go by without much excitement. However, sometimes the quietness and simplicity is what you need and can be very satisfying.

5. High School Is Dramatic.

Since there are only so many people in your school, drama happens….and fast. The girl who you want to ask out - that's your doctors daughter. The boy you just hooked up with is your best friends ex….get the point?

If you're into that small community, seeing everyone you know at the grocery store, and having your girlfriends dad as a coach, then small town living is right up your alley. Or, if you just want simplicity, quietness, and relaxation - then it may also be a good fit! No matter what, there is something unique about living in a small town, and every small town has something different to offer.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
