Ah, Arts Majors. We can range from Film to Communications, Animation to Theatre Studies, and the list goes on and on. There are so many degree-seeking artists, and yet, people don't understand the positives of pursuing a career in the arts. Many will say things like, "You can't get a job with that", "You're gonna need to support yourself somehow", and the worst has to be "Enjoy being unemployed for the rest of your life". The best part of these opinions is that they are all false. Not only are art majors incredibly talented, but they are easily employable. Don't believe me? Let me give you a few reasons why.are that they are all false. Not only are art majors incredibly talented, but they are easily employable. Don't believe me? Let me give you a few reasons why.
We have so many job opportunities.
This is because when you study for an arts degree, you're trained in so many different skills. We also always have backup plans. This means that there is most likely a business background and maybe a hint of interest to be a teacher. Picture this: two prospects for a customer service/intake job have already filled out their applications, but only one gets invited back for an interview. Person one was a Liberal Arts major with a background in math. Person two was an art major with a background in accounting, hospitality, and entrepreneurship. I may have just given a basic example, but this happens frequently in society.
We're culturally diverse.
In order to be an Arts major, you need to understand the histories of your majors. This entails understanding and having an appreciation arts from across the globe. With this knowledge, you can not only make interesting friends but there now so many connections and opportunities for you to express your art.
We will stop at nothing to get what we want.
Whenever anyone goes and tells us we can't do something, that is the fuel to light our fire. Rejection is just a natural part of the arts, so by the time you get to college, it doesn't phase us as much as it did in previous years. We'll fight for that job, or that role, or to have our art put on display, and we won't let anyone get in our way.
We can run on empty for DAYS.
This is particularly true for Performing Arts and Film majors, and this is due to the unfortunate trait of being a perfectionist. Depending on the project, we will stay up for an inconceivable number of hours just to make sure that a scene, dance, song, or a 2-minute piece of a film is to our liking. This could benefit in the future with possible employers. The ability to not stop can open up so many career opportunities.
We're used to people telling us that our interests are stupid.
From our friends to even our families, we've been told that pursuing the arts is a dead end street, but that couldn't be further from the truth. Just because you aren't interested in our career choice does not mean that it will sway our decision to stick with it.
What I'm basically trying to say is that Arts majors, though regularly disregarded, are superheroes and exceptionally driven. You may make fun of us now, but just wait until we are owning businesses and winning awards, while you're sitting in your gray cubicle working your eight-hour shifts and miserable.
