Okay, ladies. It’s February 1st and I am already seeing tweets about how you’re “single af once again :/” this Valentine’s Day. Guess what? Same! But, come on, that doesn’t mean we burn our ex-boyfriend’s shirts and eat copious amounts of chocolates as we cry at sappy rom-coms. No, ma’am. As I’m typing this (fresh out of a two-year relationship), I am so ready to OWN this holiday and make it the best Valentine's Day yet. If you have hopes to do the same, take a look at these simple steps.
1. Let go of the bitterness
So whether you’ve been single for a month, a year or maybe your whole life, you probably have an idea of what it’s like to hold a grudge with someone who used to mean a whole lot to you. And we all know that with that grudge comes the ugly little monster of bitterness. It’s obviously way easier said than done, but letting go of all that built up crud of anger, disappointment and jealousy can and will do wonders for your own happiness. It all starts with forgiveness. Forgive him, forgive yourself. Quit dwelling on the painful memories, and just look ahead to the bright future you’ve got coming your way! Sure, it didn’t work out with that one person, but I believe it takes a heartbreak to find who you’re truly meant for.
2. Treat yourself
Now, this step is 100% your individual preference. For me, personally, treating myself simply means a candle lit bubble bath, mani-pedi and maybe a little TLC around the house (yes, I’m that weirdo that finds complete and utter joy in cleaning, organizing and chalk painting old furniture). However, others may opt to have a lazier day, i.e. binge watching Netflix and ordering Chinese food (that sounds great right about now, actually). Anyway, try to spend the day loving yourself. Cause listen, there isn't a man that’s gonna give you the love you deserve until you give that love to yourself first.
3. Spread some love around
It’s easy to get annoyed, lonely and have feelings of self-doubt when you see other couples who are head over heels in love, showering one another with cute teddies and flowers. But the thing is, even without a significant other, you can be spreading the love, too! Your Valentine can be a family member, friend or even a complete stranger. Regardless of who you choose, or what you feel called to do, spread all the love you can. Even something as a simple as an anonymous note could potentially mean everything to someone. The best part? Spontaneous acts of kindness are incredibly contagious. Start an epidemic.
4. Party
Because why not? Holidays, big or small, are reason enough to celebrate. So get your girls together, slip on that black dress, pop on a bold lip and make the most of your night! After all, you’re young, you’re single and you’re fabulous.
