Growing up with my father in the Air Force, I always identify myself as a military brat. The military is like a separate community. We have our own culture and inside jokes. We understand things that non-military people will never know even exist. We are proud of our parents for serving our country and recognize the sacrifice that they, and the rest of our family, have made. Here are 10 signs that you grew up as a military brat:
1. You never know how to answer the awkward question of where you're from.
No matter where you are, the question of where you're from usually comes up at some point when meeting new people. But, what do they really mean? Where you lived the longest? The place that you liked the most?
2. The first time you went to a non-base movie theater, you were extremely confused.
Learning that not everyone played the anthem before a movie began was life-changing.
3. Moving is almost second-nature.
You've done it so often, you're used to it by now. Staying in any place longer than 3 years is a strange experience.
4. You get excited when you meet someone who has been to the same base as you.
It happens more often than you would think. Sometimes you even meet people who went to the same school overseas as you, at the same time.
5. You know what 5 p.m. on base signifies.
Stopping at 5 p.m. is an everyday occurrence.
6. You know it's really 1700, not 5 p.m..
Military time just makes so much more sense.
7. You've tried a MRE.
If you actually liked it, you're in the minority.
8. Going back to the mainland USA is a cultural shock.
You've been away so long, you no longer understand cultural references.
9. You don't know what you'll do when you lose your ID.
It'll be like losing a limb.
10. Above all else, you're proud to be a military brat.
No matter what anyone tries to call you, you'll always be a military brat.
