With a world full of seven billion people, it is easy to feel insignificant and unimportant. And while people will say, “You’re one in a million,” that just guarantees that there are thousands of people just like you in the other seven billion.
In college, you go into it thinking that everything is going to be great and it will be the best four years of your life, but speaking from experience, half of the time you just feel lost in the shuffle. Even though I attend a moderately-sized private university, I still feel like I am just someone blindly walking through the halls trying to figure out my way. And I guess that’s normal to not know what you’re doing, but it does get to point where I will, from time to time, ask myself why I would even bother going to class because it’s not like someone will really notice if I’m not there.
But the thing is, even when I’m not in class, people notice, even if they do not say anything to me themselves, or to anyone else. And if you were to not go to class, people will notice. You become a part of someone’s day, no matter how big or little of an impact, and you know that I’m right when you really think about it. There are always those kids you see around campus whose names you may not know, but you know who they are. They impact you and you don’t even speak to them on a regular basis. And should you decide to take your life, that person who knows you but doesn’t know your name will most definitely learn your name then.
And while you should have motivators and a good support system, you need to know that you are one in a billion, without anyone having to tell you. Sure, science may say that there are thousands of people “just like you,” but what does that even mean? Your body is your body and your mind is your mind, and maybe you might look similar to someone, but there is not one person in the world that has had the same life that you have had. Nobody has the exact same memories that you have and that is pretty freaking awesome, whether or not most of them are good or bad.
The way I see it, we all have negative things that happen to us, but we do get to choose how those negative things will affect us for the rest of our lives. I hope that you’ll try to embrace every negative thing into making you a better person and you’ll realize how awesome your life probably is, even when it seems like it sucks.
Just by writing this short piece, I have realized that I have a pretty incredible life. I’m improving myself through education along with having a hilarious, crazy and loving family. I have an absolutely incredible boyfriend, who loves me so much and always takes my calls at 2 a.m. whenever I want to discuss "Star Wars" fan theories and cry about how much I miss my dog. I feel that I have the ability to make people laugh and be kind. And you know what? I think that’s pretty awesome, and I think that you are pretty awesome. And I don’t care if you say I’ve never met you before, or I barely know you; I know for sure that you have something about you that makes you incredible.
So wake up every day, realize you are significant and make sure to let other people know that they are as well, because you never know what kind of impact you’ll make on that person.
