Last Friday marked the 20th anniversary of one of the most iconic television shows in recent history: "Buffy the Vampire Slayer."
While it may seem hard to believe it's been two decades since viewers first were introduced to the world of the Hellmouth and its fearless teenage vampire slayer, the show left a lasting impression on both its fans and the entire landscape of pop culture. "Buffy"'s unique mix of humor, action, and fantasy combined with its complexly realistic and lovable characters changed the standards of television. It has often been cited as the inspiration behind hit shows like "Supernatural" and the latest "Doctor Who" revival. Joss Whedon, the show's creator, has risen to become one of the most respected and high profile names in Hollywood as the writer and director for Blockbusters like "The Avengers" and the horror hit "Cabin in the Woods."Buffy's namesake and star, Sarah Michelle Gellar, took to Instagram to make her own touching tribute to the role that both changed her life and the lives of so many fans who found solace in the Scooby gang.
Gellar wrote, "While we knew the potential, I don’t think any of us saw the lasting impact our show would have...As an actor, you wish for that one role where you can leave your mark and forever be remembered, with Buffy I got so much more."
She continued, "She's a feminist challenge to gender hierarchy. Buffy may have been the Chosen One, but I was the lucky one."
Sadly, Netflix recently announced that it will be removing all episodes of "Buffy" and its spin-off series "Angel" on April 1st. For those fans who have seen the entire series and are looking for something else to fill the vampire stake shaped hole in their hearts after the Netflix pull, here are a few more books, shows and movies that will make you feel like you never left Sunnydale!
1. "Vampire Academy"
"Vampire Academy" is the perfect example of why you 'shouldn't judge a book by its cover.' When I first heard the cringe-worthy title of these books and saw the overly dramatic sultry stares of its cover models, I wrongly assumed the series was just another "Twilight" wannabe trying to cash in on the vampire-romance craze. However, Richelle Mead began writing the "Vampire Academy" novels way before "Twilight." Their hilarious and badass heroine Rose Hathaway has much more in common with Buffy Summers than with Bella Swan. Like Buffy, Rose has spent her entire life training to battle the forces of evil by attending a school for "Dhampirs," a race designed to protect an endangered race of royal magical creatures from a vicious vampire breed known as the "Strigoi"
Rose's steamy relationship with her mentor and trainer Dimitri also rivals Buffy and Angel's own forbidden and tortured romance.
If you're still hesitant to give Vampire Academy a try, the first book was also made into a very underrated movie directed by the two brothers behind teen classics like "Mean Girls" and "Heathers."
2. "Veronica Mars"
Veronica Mars may not have been gifted with supernatural slayer strength, but her incredible detective skills and cunning wit are just as deadly as Buffy's crossbow and her punning prowess. If you admired Buffy for its strong, intelligent, female lead, then you will adore watching another tiny blonde teenage girl fight back against prejudice and crime in her own corrupt California town.
3. The "Uglies" Series
While Buffy battled apocalypses during the 90s, Scott Westerfeld's "Uglies" series takes readers into a post-apocalyptic future where the government gives every citizen a plastic surgery makeover on their 16th birthday to turn them supermodel pretty. Westerfeld's writing creates an entire, imaginative world for sci-fi lovers. Characters even have their own dictionary of "future slang" that's just as infectious as Joss Whedon's signature dialogue. Much like "Buffy's" mature transition in the show's final three seasons, each installment of the "Uglies" series becomes increasingly darker and more adult as Tally loses her faith in the government and her own morals are put to the test.4. "Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog"
One of Joss Whedon's lesser known projects, Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog, was a web musical created in response to the writer's strike back in 2011. Featuring beloved nerd icons Neil Patrick Harris, Felicia Day and Nathan Fillion, the musical tells the tale of a super-villain scientist on a quest for love and glory. Anyone who enjoyed Buffy's own musical episode, "Once More With Feeling," will definitely want to add the "Dr. Horrible" songs to their playlist!
5. The "Buffy Season 8" Comics
If you've tried all these options and still feel that nothing can top the original, don't despair! Although the last official episode of "Buffy" aired on UPN back in 2003, the Slayer's story was later continued as a spin-off comic book series that pick up where the television series left off. Starting in 2007, Dark Horse Comics began publishing installments of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Season 8," including many issues authored by many of the original writers including Joss Whedon and David Fury. The comics have now gone onto their 10th season and new issues are still being released, meaning that there are so many more adventures with Buffy, Giles, and the rest of the Scoobies left to be told!
