With the New Year comes new show obsessions. This past week was the start of a new Freeform show Beyond, and one week after it's premiere, I can proudly say that I'm hooked.
Although the very first episode just premiered this past Monday, the entire season was available on the Freeform app, and I never thought that I would actually want to binge this show, mainly because I'm kind of picky with the shows I binge-watch.
Most of the time I've either developed an early opinion on the show or the show just doesn't pull me in enough to watch for hours on end, but this time it was evidently different.
Considering the fact that I watched the entire season within two days and the second episode hasn't even premiered yet, I won't reveal any spoilers or important events.
Beyond utilizes a concept that I've never really seen before and it definitely stands out. It's a good mix between drama and sci-fi, all while being modern, funny and unique.
In the show, Holden Matthews (Burkely Duffield) struggles with life after a 12-year-coma and he attempts to maintain a normal life, but due to his interactions with mystery woman, Willa (Dilan Gwyn) he discovers a "normal" life is almost impossible. While Holden tries to go back to normal, there is obviously something fishy going on with him and his mind.
With the small summary out of the way, I can finally get to my in depth opinion of this show and why I think everyone should watch it.
First, this is the only active show (that I know of) that really explores certain ideas regarding the subconscious mind, death, young love, and violence. While I watched this show, I'll admit, I wasn't quite sure how I felt about it. I even told my sister that I wasn't quite sure about it, but then proceeded to finish off the series that night.
Even though I was fairly unsure of the show at first, I'm very happy that I kept watching it.
It honestly has everything you look for in a show: suspense, love, sci-fi, villains, etc. If the first two hours didn't tie you in at all, please continue watching because it's a great show.
The actors are great and super fun to watch as well. My favorite character is by far Holden's brother Luke Matthews (Jonathan Whitesell) who just gets funnier and more loyal the more you watch. In addition to Luke, Willa is another character to watch. Although her part seems small at first, she'll become one of your favorites, trust me.
And finally, Burkely Duffield's performance as Holden Matthews is fantastic and you can tell he really gets into and cares about his character. I'm so hooked on this show that I plan to re-watch the episodes premiered on Freeform every Monday.
Beyond uses concepts that haven't been used in modern day television and it definitely deserves to be watched and respected.
