Hold up, I know what you're thinking. Maybe images of "The Walking Dead" come to your mind, flooding your emotions with rage with not knowing if Glen is alive or not. Maybe you think of "Shaun of the Dead" and again are enraged with how stupid of a movie this was. Zombie movies and television shows traditionally are known for being melodramatic and seeing their ratings drop significantly after a couple of seasons, as it becomes harder to keep people interested. I don't blame them. It's hard to see people be killed over and over and over again by these disgusting zombies. However, I think I may have found the magical unicorn of Zombie flicks, and the best part -- it is on Netflix, ladies and gents.
"iZombie" is produced by Rob Thomas, the same man who produced the popular show "Veronica Mars." The premise of this movie starts out with Liv Moore, a medical resident, who decides to stop being a nerd and goes to a boat party she's invited to by one of her fellow residents. Long story short, she gets scratched by a zombie, turns into one and unzips herself out of a body bag the next morning. A series of unfortunate events soon follow, including breaking up with her fiancé and taking a job in the coroner's office to control her craving for human brains. However, when she chows down on some frontal lobe, Moore soaks up their memories like a sponge and even retains some of their characteristics. She finds purpose in assisting a detective in solving the victims' murders.
Alright, so now that you've got a good picture of what this show is about, let me elaborate on what's so spectacular about "iZombie."
First of all, this show doesn't feature disgusting zombies, falling apart and moving slower than my grandma getting out of the tub.
The zombies featured in the show have thoughts and feelings, and they just happen to need human brains to survive. They're not displayed as the typical mindless zombie whose static character is almost as boring as watching paint dry. Moore is witty and intelligent and, in addition to the whole brain thing, craves to be normal. I think we can all relate to that in some way. Well, the normal part, anyways.
Second, Liv Moore is a total badass.
Not only does she use her visions to solve people's murders and kick bad guys butts on the daily, but she is also constantly showing other humans and zombies who's in charge. Moore could easily give up on her totally transformed life, but she chooses to fight and live life like she never has before.
The overarching plot has a good amount of romance. Not too much, not too little, but just enough.
Hey, zombies deserve love too, right? I hate those shows that are just all about girl meets boy, falls in love, just becomes a stay-at-home mom or trophy wife. Moore is empowered and independent. Love is secondary. It just happens. It's unexpected and quite beautiful.
"iZombie" causes me to question morality and feel all the feels.
Look, I just really like this bicycling scene, okay? Okay.
If you don't have any emotion while watching this, you may want to check if you're human yourself. I've cried, laughed, cheered, screamed, and even fallen off my bed out of surprise. Trust me. If you're looking for something completely unique to watch, I highly recommend checking out "iZombie."
