If there's one thing I know I'm good at it's both procrastinating on all my work while avoiding responsibilities and deadlines and binge watching an entire series on Netflix in a short amount of time. But admit it, we're all guilty of doing this, especially during April or what I like to call it, "The Worst Month of The Semester." Papers are due, presentations are to be made, exams are getting closer and becoming all too real and yet we still continue to watch all the work pile up as we start that new series or next episode we've just been dying to watch and we can't wait another moment. I'm in the same boat as you all are, avoiding that twelve and seven page paper and instead enjoying a new series I've gotten hooked on (this month it's "Parenthood" and I highly recommend it!) But before that series there was this pretty awesome show I was watching that I'm sure you've heard of, better known as "Shameless."
Let me just say that I have never gotten hooked on a show before until I started watching that one. What started out as a couple of episodes a week became a full-on binge watch to a point where I had to subscribe for a free month on Hulu just so I could watch the seventh season because I needed to find out what happened next. I loved this show, it was like nothing I've ever seen before, the characters were honest and hilarious and it tackled some pretty heavy topics throughout too. I can't even tell you how many times my jaw dropped or my eyes watered from either laughing or crying too much.
Regardless, these Gallaghers are just trying to make their way and mark in life, one screw up at a time all while maintaining a strong family bond (with some for the most part --- yes I'm talking about you, Frank ---). As I finished watching the series and patiently wait for season eight, I've realized the show and this whole idea of procrastinating my work and going on Netflix is kind of like ice cream for me. It's so not good for me (I'm lactose intolerant) but I've just got to have it no matter the consequences. And the characters on Shameless have their own distinct personalities, or "flavors" you could say. So what better brand of ice cream to describe them than Vermont's finest, Ben & Jerry's. Oh, and spoiler alert: some if not most of the Gallaghers would be the Half Baked flavor for reasons I don't need to explain..
Frank Gallagher: Everything But The....
By far the most outrageous and decorative character on the show, between his constant drinking and drug usage. Only someone like Frank is deserving of such a flavor since everything in it is as jumbled and messy as he is.
Fiona Gallagher: Triple Caramel Chunk
Ohh Fiona, one of my favorite characters, I rooted for you every time no matter what. It's not your fault you had to grow up quick and raise a family all on your own. It's not your fault you got into pretty shitty situations whether it be with the law, your family or guys. Because like this flavor, you had a lot of layers and responsibilities and still some growing up on your own to do. But you're a tough person, and no person is going to get through you so easily because you've got thick skin. So they have to continue to scoop deeper until they get to your core.
Lip Gallagher: Chubby Hubby
The name speaks for itself. Ahh, Lip Gallagher, the bad boy who's also smart. Every parent's worst nightmare but every girl's dream. He's so bad but yet so irresistible. I mean, just look at those eyes.
Ian Gallagher: Peanut Butter Fudge Core
Ian, Ian, Ian. What can I say? After ever season I've watched you've grown on me and I've seen just how much you're gone through. All you want is to be understood and looked at and treated like everyone else. You've got a shield built up around you but deep down I know you're as soft and delicate as peanut butter and fudge.
Debbie Gallagher: Banana Split
I'll admit, I never used to have a problem with Debbie. In the beginning of the series I thought she was sweet, caring and adorable. With her witty lines and trying to help everyone in certain ways to benefit them and out of all the kids she was the only one who bothered to take care of Frank. But then as the seasons went by and she grew up, so did my perception of her. She brought on a bunch of nutty situations and starting swirling out of control.that she became and still is my least favorite character.
Carl Gallagher: Coconuts for Caramel Core
Carl is the crazy one, he's bonkers. Always getting into trouble with school or the law to a point where he practically invites himself to go to juvie. Although he's had plenty of missteps I'm glad to see him making things better for himself. Here's hoping for more of that to come.
Liam Gallagher: Milk and Cookies
Adorable, little Liam. I was never more terrified when that coke incident happened and to see him like that. Though I never paid too much attention to him in the earlier seasons until now with him hanging out with Frank, not listening to Fiona as much and kind of starting to rebel, I'll always see him as just this sweet and innocent child.
Kev and V: S'mores
Even though they're not technically Gallaghers, they're still just as much a part of the family. Their relationship has its sweet as chocolate ups and hard as graham cracker downs. But it's the gooey, marshmallow middle where they always wind up meeting in the end that makes them the greatest couple on the show.
I hope this article has made you just as hungry for ice cream as it did for me. Happy end of the semester. Here's to late nights of doing work we should've been doing but were too busy watching Netflix!
