On Thursday, October 5th, The New York Times published a story that included grueling sexual assault accusations against Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein. Since then, a number of countless stories have come out from the dark about the horrors of how Harvey Weinstein has treated women in the entertainment industry. Actress Alyssa Milano revived the movement that activist Tarana Burke had originally started: #MeToo. The #MeToo viral movement has overtaken social media timelines across the country and is bringing light to one of the biggest issues in today's society.
The #MeToo movement is different that what the typical scroller on social media might make it out to be. #MeToo is not just about sharing one's story of sexual assault, harassment or abuse for everyone to read as if they are looking for empathy. It is about the men and women of this world coming together to show that sexual assault is real; it has happened to too many human beings and no longer will those people stand by and pretend that it never happened.
Amid dozens of new reports of abuse from Harvey Weinstein, others in the entertainment and sports industries have come out about their past experiences with being harassed, assaulted, or sexualized by people in high positions. Last week at "Elle's"Women in Hollywood event, Jennifer Lawrence spoke out about being told to lose weight for a role while in her teens. She stated, "When I was much younger and starting out, I was told by producers of a film to lose 15 pounds in two weeks." She went on to further describe the experience by saying, "During this time a female producer had me do a nude line-up with about five women who were much, much, thinner than me. We all stood side by side with only tape on covering our privates."
Recently, USA Olympic gymnast McKayla Maroney released a statement on Twitter claiming that she was molested by the team doctor of the United State Women's Gymnastic Team, Dr. Larry Nassar. She continued to write that Dr. Nassar had told her that she was receiving "medically necessary treatment that he had been performing on patients for over 30 years." Later in her post, Maroney went on to add, "People should know that this is not just happening in Hollywood. This is happening everywhere. Wherever there is a position of power, there seems to be potential for abuse. I had a dream to go to the Olympics, and the things that I had to endure to get there, were unnecessary, and disgusting." Dr. Nassar is currently being sentenced to prison for the possession of 37,000 images and videos of child pornography.
Harvey Weinstein is just one example of sexual assault. There are hundreds of thousands more out there and this movement will show them that they no longer can do what they have been doing. #MeToo is powerful. It is strong. And it will make a lasting impact on our society.
#MeToo.
