7 Reasons To Consider The Peace Corps After Graduation

The Peace Corps is an amazing organization that sends volunteers abroad to countries in need of specialized skills. Volunteers can apply to serve in over 60 different countries in the areas of agriculture, education, community economic development, environment, health, or youth development. So, whether your major is pre-med or education, The Peace Corps has plenty to offer.

1.You get to form relationships with new people abroad.

No matter which work area you apply to, you will be collaborating directly with the people of your town or village. A two-year service term means creating lasting relationships with your host family, co-workers, and fellow volunteers.

2. Free travel experience.

With over 60 countries to choose from, you could find yourself on the island of Tonga, the beaches of Thailand, or the Carpathian Mountains of Ukraine! Peace Corps covers flight costs to your assigned site, and pays volunteers a living wage during their service term.

3. Student loan forgiveness.

Because the Peace Corps is a sector of the United States Government, serving as a volunteer means you are technically serving the Government. Government servants often receive loan forgiveness during their time of service, which means two years worth of loans you don't have to worry about paying back.

4. You'll create a lasting difference in your community.

Whether it be improving literacy among school aged children or serving as an on site medical expert, your two years of service will make a difference for a community that is in desperate need of your skills.

5. You'll gain unique work and life experiences that will stand out on a resume.

We've all been asked to tell an interviewer about a time when...xyz. With two years in the Peace Corps under your belt, you'll have real stories about your experiences with project management, leadership, and collaboration skills.

6. You'll receive compensation when you return to the U.S.

After two years of service with the Peace Corps, returned volunteers are rewarded with compensation close to $8,000, which can be used to pay off remaining loans, or to pay for tuition, a car, or housing.

7. You'll be immersed in an amazing new culture and language.

While Peace Corps applicants aren't required to know the native language in their host country, language development is a significant part of training prior to departure. Additionally, you'll be conforming to the cultural norms of your country, which gives you a cultural experience you can't get from just reading. Prepare to celebrate new holidays, wear new clothing, and connect with others like you never have before.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
