Country music. Some people love it, some people hate it; the latter don’t know what they are missing out on. The unmistakable sound of acoustic guitars, fiddles, banjos, and the like has been rapidly transcending across the country in recent years, capturing the hearts of music-lovers everywhere. Whether you’re listening to Willie Nelson or Carrie Underwood, you’re bound to find a song that you’ll find yourself listening to 24/7.
Here at school, I can only blast country music when one of my quadmates is not in the room because she absolutely cannot stand it. Love you to death Cam, but I need my fix. Due to this personal tragedy, I’ve picked some of my favorite country songs for each day of the week. Hopefully this gets my roomie to appreciate country music just a little bit more.
MONDAY
“Highway 20 Ride” by Zac Brown Band
This is one of the very first songs I heard by ZBB, and I instantly fell in love. I feel that this somber ballad is great for Mondays as it talks about a father wanting to see his son, just how everyone “counts the days and the miles back home” to the weekend again when Monday rolls around. Of course, a father’s love for his son is much more meaningful than one’s for the weekend, but we can all somewhat relate. Outside of that aspect, the calm tone of this song is perfect for Monday mornings when all you want is some peace and quiet before the hectic week ahead begins.
TUESDAY
“Head Over Boots” by Jon Pardi
I could listen to this song on repeat for the rest of my life. The way Pardi describes how in love he is with his girl gets me every time. I think this song is fitting for Tuesdays because it will no doubt put you in a warm and fuzzy mood to help get rid of the Tuesday blues. The second day of the week is often harder than the first (especially when you have a 9 a.m. like me), but “Head Over Boots” will cure any negative thoughts you have. It might leave you feeling a little sad about someone not sweeping you off your feet, but you’ll appreciate this cute little melody.
WEDNESDAY
“I Like the Sound of That” by Rascal Flatts
This classic upbeat tune by Rascal Flatts is an awesome song to get you through hump day before Thursday rolls around. The vibes from this song are romantic, as are most country songs, but it definitely gets the job done in terms of helping you push through to Thursday. Although the lyrics revolve around a guy wanting a girl to ask him to “come on over”, I like to think of the girl as the weekend and the guy as the rest of us. Who wouldn’t like the sound of the weekend coming on over?
THURSDAY
“Vacation” by Thomas Rhett
Finally, we’ve reached Thursday. For many college students, this is the start of the weekend. After grinding hard all week, it’s finally time to go out and enjoy some fun (non-alcoholically, of course). “Vacation” will instantly put you in the mood for a good time, as it describes partying on the beach all day. Being in school in Boston where the temperature has already dropped below 50 degrees multiple times, this sounds oh-so enticing. What more could you ask for after a long week of studying?
FRIDAY
“American Kids” by Kenny Chesney
“American Kids” is a fantastic way to get your Friday going. This feel-good tune describes teenage American kids getting into mischief and just having a really good time. I’m sure anybody who listens to this song could relate to the lyrics, which makes it all the more enjoyable. This song provides a realness to what kids do for fun. It’s not all about going out and getting completely wasted, but simply having a good time with your friends, like good old “uptown down home American kids.”
SATURDAY
“Wasted Time” by Keith Urban
Wasting time is something I know all too well, so of course this is one of my all-time favorite songs. Keith Urban perfectly describes having a great time with your best friends, which is what Saturdays are all about. No matter what you’re doing, you know you’re going to have the best time when you’re with your friends. “Wasted Time” is a super fun song that should for sure be on your playlist for Saturday night.
SUNDAY
“Tomorrow Never Comes” by Zac Brown Band
It only makes sense to start and end the week with ZBB, so I choose to finish off the week with “Tomorrow Never Comes.” The title of this song pretty much describes how we all feel about Sundays, as the “tomorrow” would be Monday, which we all don’t want to come. A lyric in this song states that we “better hold on tight, before you know it’s gone,” which to me metaphorically means holding on to whatever glimpse of the weekend is left. This song is available in the original version or acoustic, up to your choosing for however you’re feeling come Sunday night.
