Seven Common College Complaints MSU Students Never Have To Experience

I might be a little bias here, but I’m just going to come out and say Michigan State is one of the best colleges (if not the best) to ever exist. A school is made up of so much more than leading in every sector of academics or having an exclusive admissions process, which is so evident at MSU. Here are seven common college complaints that you hear most students complain about, but will never hear come out of MSU student’s mouths:

  1. Running out of laundry coins. At MSU, all laundry (yes, all) is free! You never need any coins or money which is awesome because most college students don’t have either of those things anyways.
  2. Bad cafeteria food. MSU has one of the best lunch facilities in all of America. I don’t know if that’s an actual fact, but I could only assume that’s true because our cafeteria food is actually great.
  3. Lack of school spirit. If you’ve ever questioned the necessity of school spirit, spend a day on MSU’s campus on game day during football season. It’s an amazing feeling being surrounded by a sea of green and people who love your school as much as you do.
  4. Sucky teams. Whether it’s football, basketball or debate, we’re usually ranked in the top ten, maybe even top five in the nation. How awesome is that?
  5. Being located in the middle of nowhere. I’m not going to say that everything outside of East Lansing is the most populated areas in America, but we’re definitely not in the middle of nowhere. We’re located next door to Michigan’s capital (Lansing, not Detroit). We’re also not too far from Detroit, so we can easily get the perks of a big city, too.
  6. Always running into people you know. With over 50,000 students roaming our campus, it’s pretty unlikely you’ll run into a ton of people you know on a daily basis. I’m not going to say it’s impossible, but it’s definitely easier to avoid people you don’t want to see.
  7. Dorms are ugly/gross/etc. Our dorms, even though they’re not air conditioned, are pretty great. Some of our dorms are known to resemble Harry Potter while others are updated with hardwood floors and bigger rooms, so we definitely could have it worse.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
