Here at JSU, sorority recruitment just capped off with one of the most exciting days that will happen during your four years as an active Greek member: Bid Day! It's an emotional roller coaster for everyone, but most of all, I believe, for seniors like myself. You're happy. You're sad. You're tired. It's an altogether overwhelming experience. It's your last ever Bid Day. How do you handle it? Well, I'll tell you how I did.
7:00 A.M. Wake Up
After two alarms, a shower, a pop tart and a granola bar, I was kind of ready to face the day. I'm by no means a morning person, so the excitement hadn't quite hit yet.
9:00 A.M. Meeting
Notorious for being late, my best friend/sister and I strolled in about ten minutes after the scheduled time. But because nothing ever actually starts on time, nobody really noticed. With the announcement of all of our new sisters, the excitement started to kick in a little bit.
10:00 A.M. Walk to Bid Day
The first trek across campus for the day... and it's filled with cheers. I don't know if you've ever tried walking up hill while cheering before, but it's hell. By the time we actually reached the spot where the Bid Day proceedings were to commence, I was sweating and my voice was going out. The excitement was quickly waning.
11:00 A.M. New Members Run Out
FINALLY!! The moment we've all been waiting and cheering for for an hour! You think your voice just can't handle any more, but when you see those girls run across the lawn toward you, you can't help but jump and scream and get swept up in the excitement (no matter how drenched in sweat and exhausted you are).
11:30 A.M. Pictures
The second trek across campus begins, and, lo and behold, it starts raining. Uphill we go again, thankfully leaving the rain behind us. Second in line for pictures, we get it done as quickly as possible (hiding under shady trees whenever time permits). The excitement that was dampened by the rain was quickly coming back the more I talked to the new members (my Rose Buddy in particular).
1:00 P.M. Bid Day Party
The excitement is officially back in full force as I'm surrounded by my new sisters as well as ones I've known for years.
For me, the sadness that most seniors feel on their last Bid Day never really came. That in no way means I don't love my sorority and my sisters. I love everything that Greek life has given me: friends for life, personal growth, unique and unforgettable life experiences. However, when I looked around at all of the alumnas that showed up in support of our chapter, it was weird knowing that next year I will be one of those people.
