When I first started my college career I decided that I was going to get a work study job on campus so I could devote all my time to studying and socializing. With every passing academic year, I found myself deviating from my original plan. My sophomore year, I was spending more time writing for my campus newspaper than I expected (my work study job). My junior year, I became a section editor for the student newspaper and found myself a job. I worked part-time at a local convenience store called Speedway, you may have heard of it. It's like Sheetz. Now, I am in my senior year and somehow I ended up agreeing to be a full-time employee at Speedway, I still hold my editor position on the newspaper, I am an associate editor for a literary magazine, an Odyssey Online Content Creator, and now completely insane.
Over the summer I was handling full-time very well. I woke up, went to work, went home, ate, and fell asleep. I did that every day. No problem. Now, I find that sleep is a word of the past.
However, there are two days out of my week where I can say that I actually feel like I am getting everything done that I need to, the days that I work overnight.
I can start my shift anywhere between 6 and 11 in the evening. I bake bread, cinnamon rolls, cookies, and doughnuts. This sounds like very laborious work, but it is more like a giant version of an Easy Bake Oven. I take the products out of the freezer and either throw them in the oven or the proofer.
While I am waiting for my bread to bake, I sit down in the office and do my homework. Granted I do not get a lot of my homework done, but I get more than I would have if I was working my normal 2-10 shift where I never stop moving and making food for grumpy people.
I never thought I would ever like working during the night at a gas station, but I do. I get all of my bread and pastries made and bagged by either 3 or 4 in the morning. If you think about it, that really isn't that bad. I know of plenty nights where I found myself up watching Netflix at 3 in the morning instead of sleeping so why not go to work, get paid, and do homework too?
What I am struggling with currently is whether or not I should move more of my shifts to the overnight bakery so then I can free up more of my day time for projects, meetings, and friends.
What would you do?
