No guilt in life, no fear in death, this is the power of Christ in me; From life's first cry to final breath. Jesus commands my destiny. No power of hell, no scheme of man, can ever pluck me from His hand. Till He returns or calls me home, here in the power of Christ I'll stand.
As of very recently, I learned through a Facebook trending topic that Christina Grimmie has been shot and killed.
At first, I thought it was some kind of spoof. I recognized the name, and read the title that followed, and although I didn't know Christina personally, I did not want it to be true. I was shocked.
For those of you who don't know, Christina Grimmie was a season six contestant on The Voice. Before that, she was pretty popular on YouTube both as a cover artist and for some of her more quirky videos. Personally, I first found her while searching cover videos and found a video of her and Sam Tsui covering "Just a Dream," by Nelly. I stumbled across her "Above all that is random" videos where her and her best friend made autotune videos about totally random phrases and sentences. I actually made a few of my own autotune covers both by myself and with my friend and was inspired by these videos to be creative but also goofy.
I soon found out that she was a Christian, and had covered a few Christian songs as well, and she wasn't shy about her faith. This is something that really stood out to me, as I'm sure it's very easy to put your faith on the backburner as you become more successful. Honestly, she was just a great role model as a musician and person. She resembled something that I had hoped I could become.
Since finding out that she was shot for seemingly no reason, I am appalled. How can someone with such a positive image be the one targeted to be the victim of violence. I pray for the man that did this, as he must've been going through so much to feel that he had to kill someone.
But I also pray for Christina's family, friends, and loved ones. While they do have the hope that Christ gives us, it doesn't totally take away the hurt and pain they are feeling. I praise God though that they will be able to see her again someday. I also praise God that while many of us did not know Christina personally, we will be able to meet her someday thanks to the gift of salvation.
Christina covered a song in 2012 called, "In Christ Alone." The video is now getting a lot of views as a result of her recent death, and there is a reason for that. Take a look at some of the lyrics in this song.
"In Christ alone my hope is found... And as He stands in victory, sin's curse has lost its grip on me, for I am His and He is mine... No guilt in life, no fear in death, this is the power of Christ in me; From life's first cry to final breath. Jesus commands my destiny. No power of hell, no scheme of man, can ever pluck me from His hand. Till He returns or calls me home, here in the power of Christ I'll stand."
In church, we often sing these songs and may not take much notice of the lyrics about how even in death, we will praise God and that we have hope in him. But who would've thought that as Christina was singing these lyrics, that the parts about death would actually apply to her. Where it says, "here in the power of Christ I'll stand," she honestly lived that out.
I did some snooping and found her best friend's instagram account. I expected to see some very sad things from a heartbroken friend. While they were in fact sad (death is a sad thing), they were honestly some of the most positive comments I've ever seen from someone who's just lost a loved one. It was clearly evident that they were both were firmly grounded in their faith. Her friend talked of the coffee/devotional dates that they would no longer go on, but how Christina is in heaven now. Her friend used this opportunity to communicate the gospel to people!
A fellow star and friend of Christina, Selena Gomez, paid tribute to her in one of her recent concerts. In fact, she covered the song, "Transfiguration," by Hillsong Worship and dedicated it to Christina. I watched a video of this happening. All throughout the video, everyone is cheering and screaming. But then as soon as she starts to sing, it is incredible. The cheering instantly dies down as everyone is listening intently on what she is saying. Some people even start to sing along.
How awesome is that? Even in Christina's death, she was making an impact on people for Christ, Her closest loved ones are turning to God in this troubled time. There were most likely unbelievers at Selena Gomez's concert, and they had a chance to see the love of God in action and to hear the name of Jesus proclaimed. People are reading her best friend's posts and seeing how much hope she has with God.
I can honestly say confidently that Christina's greatest desire was to see God be put first and to be a light for others to see his love. In all of her videos, she is seen acting goofy and having this unexplainable joy; a joy that can only come from God.
In 2013, Christina tweeted, "Sometimes God allows terrible things to happen in your life and you don't know why. But that doesn't mean you should stop trusting Him." It seems to me that neither Christina, nor her loved ones, have stopped trusting him. In fact, they have turned even more towards trusting Him.
I see the legacy that Christina Grimmie has left. While she may not have been as well known as someone like Justin Beiber or Luke Bryan, I think she has left a fantastic legacy as a person/musician who honored and followed God throughout her career. A legacy that I see the number of people she has been able to impact, even in her death, and it again has reminded me how great of a role model she was. When I die, I want people to remember me the same way as most people remember Christina: a firm believer who trusted God to guide me and lead me throughout everything I do. A believer who clearly showed the love of God to everyone. A believer that made sure to give credit back to God and to never forget that He comes first.
What kind of legacy do you want to leave? Your own? Or a God-filled, God-evident legacy?
Thank you Christina Grimmie, for sharing your God-given talents with us and for always keeping your eyes fixed upon Him. Thank you for your want and desire to honor him. I can't wait for that glorious day when I get to meet you and worship the Lord alongside you.
God bless!
