Growing up right down the road from Rowan gives me an advantage when it comes to adventuring outside of campus. Having gone to Rutgers for three years before coming back home, I would always take advantage of the closeness of New York City or go to Montclair for their famous donuts. Now commuting, I realize how little students know about the opportunities that surround them. Whether it's a night on the town or just a day trip, South Jersey is filled with secret spots hidden around this tiny area. One of the best areas to wander around on your sunny, day off of class is Historic Collingswood.
Collingswood, NJ has everything from clothing stores, to cafes, to breweries, and all in between. The multiple restaurants range from Thai to French to American to Italian, and more! Each cafe has its own personality, and the aesthetics will show (gotta get the perfect Insta, amirite?) Pop Shop is a retro diner, serving over 30 different types of grilled cheeses! Or you could go all Danny and Sandy and order the classic burger and shake.
A personal favorite spot of mine would be the Devil's Creek Brewery located on Haddon Ave. The environment is very down to earth, a great place to just talk with friends, and you get to enjoy a selection of unique stouts! They serve different flavors such as Caramel Apple, Chocolate Milk, and Pecan. Flights cost around $8 each and come with 4 different flavors of your choice. This is the perfect Sunday Funday spot to go and relax before reality hits again on Monday. (21+ to go, drink responsibly)
After knocking back a few cold ones, your friends and you could venture off into some pretty awesome side shops. The strip is filled with local business owners showcasing their various talents including homemade bath bombs and soaps, vintage furniture, or even thrift shops if you want to find a new style for the night ahead.
Walking up and down Haddon Ave, you will find just what you’re looking for, or even something you’re not! And if you want to get away from the small town feel of South Jersey, you can hop over the pond to the exciting city of brotherly love.
