Seasons: A Concept that Doesn’t Exist in Arkansas

When it comes to weather and the seasons in Arkansas, Arkansans are never sure what season it is or what the weather will be like. In most places you can probably get away with not looking at The Weather Channel, but in Arkansas The Weather Channel is your friend. Two weeks ago in Arkansas the highest temperature was about 58 degrees. Last week we experienced three seasons in one week: fall, winter, and spring. This week the weather is between late fall and early winter. When packing for college, it is essential to bring all forms of clothes in order to be prepared for the unpredictable weather here.

Ask any Arkansan and they will tell you how crazy the weather is here. This year we experienced winter up until late March. Spring was about three weeks. Summer was hot and long. As for as fall, we never really have fall when most people have fall. In fact, the trees have just started to lose leaves. Fall in Arkansas last for about a month, if that long.

Because the weather in Arkansas is so unpredictable, us Arkansans act crazy when it comes to weather changes. The worst is when it is snowing. A Walmart can be cleaned out in a minutes if it starts to snow more than a half inch. People suddenly forget to drive and they go into survival mode as if that half inch of snow is going to block them in their home for days. People take snow more seriously than tornado warnings in Arkansas. We’re in the South, so tornadoes are expected, but snow is a sign of the world ending. Oh yeah, snow in Arkansas usually turns into ice by midnight, so the driving starts to get really bad.

So, if you are traveling to Arkansas anytime soon, here are a few tips to help you survive the weather.

1. Bring a jacket.

Jackets are good to have because it may rain or snow suddenly in Arkansas. Even if it doesn’t rain or snow, the temperature can drop at any time.

2. Bring an umbrella.

The rain may be strong, so a jacket isn’t going to help keep you from getting completely soaked.

3. Summer/Spring clothes

One week maybe extremely cold, but the next week the temperature could get up to 74 degrees. With the sun shining and no wind blowing, that’s pretty hot in Arkansas.

4. Be a safe driver

You’re told this when you first learn how to drive, but when driving in Arkansas this is very important. You have to drive for yourself and the people around you. People freak out in snow/ice. In fact, the best thing to do is not drive when the weather is bad in Arkansas.

Despite the strange weather, Arkansas is a great place to visit. Don't let the crazy weather keep you from visiting the Natural State at least once in your life.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
