Hello again from your fave foodie gal. I decided to add on to my ethnic culinary favorites list with another delicious German restaurant. If you missed my first German restaurant review of Hollarbach's Willow Tree Cafe, you can find it here! Otherwise, stick around because you're definitely going to want to see this--especially the dessert. So, after further embracing my German roots, it was about time I introduced you to:
Schumann's Jager Haus
Found amongst all the hustle and bustle of the well known Church Street, Shumann's Jager Haus remains unlike it's neighbors and is never too busy to seat you right away. I always make reservations just in case but of the many times I've been here, I've never truly needed them. #score.
The minute you enter the restaurant, it's like you've walked into an actual German pub with all it's wooden furniture and traditional decor. Not to mention, the bar is fully stocked with an impressive collection of beer and their corresponding glasses. 😏 I'm not much of a beer drinker but my dad always likes to order their darkest on tap. Maybe one day I'll catch follow suit but for now, I'll stick to water. LOL.
FYI I'm totally going to get fancy with these menu item names just because it's too fun not to. Up first were the kartoffelpuffer, also known as potato pancakes, which came with sour cream and apple sauce. Personally, I don't care for apple sauce on my potato pancakes but hey, you can't knock it 'til you try it!
In case you are unfamiliar with this form of pancake, I liken them to hash browns mixed with diced onions and smushed together in pancake form. Yummy right? 😂 What I love about Schumann's kartoffelpuffer (hehe, I can't get over that name) is how thick and dense they are. We always do 1 order (2 pancakes) and it's plenty to serve a party of 4. Not to mention, they aren't super fried either which my sensitive tummy really appreciates. 👌
Up next is the main course...even though I'm partially stuffed from all the kartoffelpuffer --last time I promise LOL. I stick to my usual German fave, ChickenSchnitzel, although you have the choice between a breaded pork or chicken cutlet plus 2 sides. I love their green beans and this time chose the käse spätzle. Different from plain spätzle, this wonderful side dish contains the traditional spätzle egg noodle, onions, TONS of cheese, and ham. Man oh man. Once you go käse spätzle you never go back lemme just say. 💁 The chicken was supa crispy and tender but a little more fried than I like. But again, I'm also a whimp when it comes to that sorta thing. Still tasty tho, I just could not finish it all in one sitting.
Now, the moment you've all been waiting for. Please take a moment to soak in this picture of what is hands down the BEST apple strudel in the history of ever--and by ever I just mean of all the strudels I've ever had LOL. Schumann's apfelstrudel is simply ooey-gooey warm apples baked into a light pastry and topped with vanilla ice cream and caramel. Pure heaven on a plate. Don't even get me started on that flakey crust...cause it's literally the best part. 😍
So if you're ever in downtown Orlando, you might wanna swing by Schumann's for a nice cold beer and some apple strudel. And maybe some schnitzel...and käse spätzle...and potato pancakes? Just order the whole menu honestly, you'll be impressed. 😉
