Halloween is right around the corner which means it's time to prep with haunted houses and scary movie marathons. This year I challenge you to add in a scary book as well! Horror novels are personally one of my favorite genres, as they always keep me on my toes! Here are five books that are more than likely to give you the heebie-jeebies, ranked from the least scariest to the most scariest.
5. Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonnegut
While this book isn't the most terrifying novel to date, it is still one to keep you on your toes. This anti-war novel follows Billy Pilgrim as he travels through time. The story focuses on his time in Dresden and his suffering of PTSD. It's an intriguing book with satirical humor and the perfect amount of twistedness.
Scary Rating: 3 Stars
2. Diary by Chuck Palahniuk
This story by Palahniuk while not as graphic as his other stories, is still very dark. Written in a diary format to add to the creepiness, Misty Wilmot was once an artist, but is now forced to live on a tiny island with her child and her husband. After her husband attempts suicide, he falls into a coma. That's when Misty begins to take notice of all the spooky details in her life she never noticed before.
Scary Rating: 5
3. Haunted by Chuck Palahniuk
Another Chuck Palahniuk book and easily one of the creepiest I've ever read. This story is written in a unique way as it follows a group of writers trapped together in a house. In the book contains a disturbing short story about each character. This story is definitely not for the faint-hearted.
Scary Rating: 7
4. The Mist by Stephen King
Although the ending might not be quite as twisted as the movie, the book is still super freaky. It's a terrifying novel about a deadly fog full of dangerous creatures and murdering families. The story is horrifying, but you just can't put it down.
Scary Rating: 8
5. Pet Sematary by Stephen King
I think we can all agree Stephen King is the KING of horror stories, and he certainly proves it with Pet Sematary. It's about a husband and wife with their daughter and son and even a cute little cat moving into a pretty new house. Seems innocent enough, right? Wrong. This book is definitely not the easiest read. Warning: you might be a little scarred after reading this.
Scary Rating:10
Reading is fun.. and maybe even a little scary! Happy October!
