Here's the deal with becoming an adult: you have to do adult things (mindblowing, I know!). These so called "adult things" may or may not include having you car fixed (depends on if you have a car or not).
So imagine that you're just driving around, minding your own business...and happen to drive with your e-brake on...
Ya know what? It has happened to most people. I am not afraid to say that I have left my e-brake on while driving or that I've left my lights on while the car is off only to find my car's battery was dead when I came back to it (S/O to my girl Jenna who had a portable jumper in her car).
Now after leaving said e-brake on, you notice that a few lights had come on on your dashboard...like important lights. Like the emergency brake light won't turn off even when you don't have it on and the ABS light which let's you know that if you slam on your breaks, the breaks will pump so that they don't lock (don't quote me on that definition).
Okay naturally you get worried so who do you call? Your dad. And dad tells you to take it to the shop. Like that's all cool and stuff but you're in a city you don't know that well, let alone one you know well enough to know the right mechanic.
You do your research and find a place with good reviews. Yay! The nice man checks out your car after you tell him what was wrong and gives you the diagnosis. You don't understand a single word he's saying, but he knows cars and you don't.
And there lies the issue. You don't know cars. He KNOWS you don't know cars. This little encounter right now is very very easy money for him. He tells you that there is an electrical issue and the breaks are shot and you need spark plugs and this and that. And what do you say? "Uh...okay, yeah just do it" without even thinking "Hey, maybe I should call my dad first." Because you're trying to be an adult.
Fast forward six hours later (yes SIX) to getting the bill. The $900 bill. The bill that will literally take your entire paycheck and then some. You cry a little inside as you hand over your credit card.
You got scammed. You find out from your dad that there was no way you needed any of that, even IF you had driven 20 miles with your e-brake on. The breaks that he fixed weren't even associated with your problem. It was probably only the electrical issue in total that needed to be fixed. And it should NOT have take six hours.
How stupid do you feel now? Incredibly stupid. But hey, at least your dad is calling to yell at the man for scamming his how obviously naive-about-cars daughter. And never again will you try and adult...without consulting your dad first.
