The past few weeks have been filled with negativity. The media has made sure that everyone is hearing about it every day. We need a break from it. Sometimes we can’t seem to catch a break. We see it on social media when we’re scrolling through our news feeds right before bed. We hear about it on the radio. What if we turned off all that noise? What if instead of listening to our newscasters we turn up the songs that we love. I’ve decided to create a playlist that’s become a safe space for me. I am very excited to share it.
1. 'Home' By One Direction
First up on this playlist is a song that means the absolute world to me. This song has quickly become a song that LGBT+ fans relate to. The lyrics “So many night I thought it over. I told myself I kind of liked her, but there was something missing in her eyes.” really hit home. In high school, I dated guys and I convinced myself that I would make it work but there was always something missing. It wasn’t until about six months ago I came to terms with my sexuality. Now another line that is very important to me is “It was there I saw it in your eyes.” This line is gender neutral, unlike the line I just mentioned. A lot of fans have interpreted this song to be about a relationship between two people of the same sex. A lot of those fans have related to this song because of that reason. This song has a very deep meaning no matter how you interpret it. Home has to be my favorite song on this playlist.
2. 'Somebody' By Young Rising Sons
Young Rising Sons are a band from New Jersey. They're currently working on their highly anticipated debut album. In October the band put out their second EP "The Kids Will Be Fine". A certain track on the EP really stuck out to me. Somebody is a song filled with reassurance that even when the going gets tough someone is there to lean on. This song belongs on the playlist because everyone deserves to have someone. Even if you don't physically have someone there the song makes you feel like the band is there for you . I personally find that helpful.
3. 'Secret Love Song Part 2' By Little Mix
Another ballad has found its way onto the playlist. In fact, this is the very last ballad. SLS is another song that members of the LGBT+ community have made their own. The song discusses not being able to show their love for another person out in the open. Little Mix dedicated this song to the victims of the Orlando shooting. At another show the girls held up a pride flag to show their support. Secret Love Song Part 2 is very special to a lot of people. I hope that by sharing this, more people will be able to relate to it.
4. 'Shake It Off' By Taylor Swift
This is the final song on the playlist. By now everyone has heard this song and is either tired of it or dances their butt off every time they hear it! People have always said "oh, just shake it off" when things get rough. This song found its way onto the playlist because everyone should dance out their stressors. The best way to enjoy this song is turned all the way up and singing along with it. Remember it's okay to be you!
Everyone deserves to be themselves and no one should have to live in fear. I hope that all of you who have read this have found at least one or two of these songs helpful.
