Tuesday Jan. 26, 2016, Rostam Batmanglij announced that he was no longer a member of Vampire Weekend. In his statement on Twitter Batmanglij writes, “My identity as a songwriter plus producer, I realized, needs to stand on its own.” I respect Batmanglij’s decision to leave the band to explore his identity as a songwriter and producer, but I do not think that the separation of identity from Vampire Weekend that he seeks will come easily.
Vampire Weekend’s fan base is so dedicated and I think they will always support Batmanglij in any project he pursues.
Bamanglij’s departure from the band does not mean that Vampire Weekend is no longer a band, but it does mean that the band will never be the same. Batmanglij produced the band’s first two LPs and co-produced their third LP as well. Batmanglij was not only responsible for helping give Vampire Weekend that unique sound that we have all loved for years but he was also one of the main songwriters for the band. It is hard to imagine what Vampire Weekend will be like without Batmanglij but he will certainly be missed.
Although I am happy for Batmanglij expanding his career, I can’t help but feel a little sad. His departure from the band makes me feel as if my adolescence has officially died. Vampire Weekend was an essential part of my adolescence and growing up. They’re the band that made me fall in love with live music.
I remember first learning about Vampire Weekend when I was in eighth grade. Every morning I would turn on MTV and watch music videos as I was getting ready to go to school, this was of course back when MTV still played music videos. I remember watching Vampire Weekend’s video for “A-Punk” and immediately I was drawn to them. Their video was unique and simple but most importantly their sound was like nothing I had heard before, they were different from any artist. This was when my love for Vampire Weekend started. They were one of the first bands I truly fell in love with.
Years after that, I was lucky enough to see Vampire Weekend live, and they were everything I could have ever hoped for. They sounded exactly how they sound on their albums, the lighting was incredible, and this is when I first discovered my love for live music. Vampire Weekend sparked my love and appreciation for live music, and they have been an essential part of my life thus far.
As an ode to Vampire Weekend and my adolescence I have made a playlist with some of my favorite songs by them. This list was not easy to make, because I’m a fan of all of their songs, these are just some of my favorites. I hope you enjoy!
