The Benefits of Living With Someone

Living with roommates can be difficult, but there are many benefits that can far outway the negatives. As long as everyone equally contributes and practices the golden rule (treat others as you would like to be treated), having roommates can really be a great experience that can lead to lifelong friendships.

1. They're always there for you.

When you come home after a long day at school/work, guess who’s on the couch with a bottle of wine ready to hear about it? Stressed about school? They probably are, too. Overwhelmed at work? I bet they can relate. Having relationship troubles? Your roommate knows what it’ll take to put a smile back on your face.

2. Your roommate can boost your GPA.

You might find your roommates scattered throughout the house doing homework: one’s on the couch with a laptop and headphones, one’s sitting at the table with a book and a cup of tea, and you’re so inspired, that you find the will to join and get that essay started. At 9pm, the questions: “If I make a pot of coffee, will you drink some with me?” and ”Hey, wanna go to the library with me?” are frequently asked in our household.

3. You almost always have a partner for everything.

You eat together, you clean together, you go out together, you stay in and binge-watch Netflix together. What more could you ask for?

4. They might even become your best friends.

You share so much: your space, your food, your music, your clothes and so much more. This morning, I woke up to my roommate bringing me a cup of hot coffee in bed. We’ll be friends forever, you can count on that.

5. Help is always there when you need it.

Locked out of the house, need a ride to the airport, advice on relationships, want a second opinion on the quality of the essay you’ve just written? Your roommate is just a phone call away.

6. Double everything.

Share wardrobes. Meet their friends, make friends with them. Eat the leftovers that they don’t want anymore. These are all things that you wouldn’t get living alone. Not to mention, double the fun.

7. You can split everything.

Bills, pizza, decorations, repairs, alcohol, a couch. Everything is half-off. Which is amazing.

So, there you have it: some of the benefits that I’ve found from living with roommates. Sure, it’s not as inexpensive as living with your parents, but it can be so much more fun. And sure, it’s not as private as living on your own, but it’s a lot less lonely.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
