There is a certain prison in this world
And within that prison are other prisons
They hold you captive like they hold me captive
They chain me, and whip me with thy rod and thy staff
They force me into that green pasture
I shall not want a life like this
A life with false promise and empty prayers and empty beds and empty hearts
Though you kill us for killing our own, you love us all
With a love so strong and so terrible that we cannot contain it
I wish to reject it, yet it is everywhere
Planted like pesticide on every street corner and highway
We are wrong, yet our pride tells us differently
You are right, yet my pride tells me differently
Your knowledge, implanted in me from the beginning
With every speech, a lobotomy is performed
We become your toys, your clay
You shape and form and play with our futures
Yet we are happy with our lack of control, decision, and self-respect
We are drugged and hypnotized by you
And I know that despite what I’m told
You love you and only you
And nobody else but you
And for better, or worse, every inmate loves you
But I am alone in this prison
Yet I am satisfied.
