Like many college kids during winter break, I have been binge watching television for the past week. My recent obsession has been with the hit animated Adult Swim show, Rick and Morty.
Rick and Morty follows the characters Rick Sanchez, an alcoholic, narcissistic scientist and Morty Smith, Rick’s teenage grandson, as they venture through multiverses and the universe getting into various predicaments. As the show starts you realize just how deranged Rick is as he constantly puts his grandson and family in danger; while degrading their intelligence and lifestyle. Rick is also the character that delivers the darkest humor of the show in the most ribald way possible.
However, as the show continues, you find yourself slowly siding with Rick and by the time you finish season one he becomes one of your favorite characters. So why do we end up loving this egotistical maniac of a character?
- He is a Genius- Rick has the intellectual know how to build spaceships out of garbage and invent devices that help him hop through multiverses. His character is also able to think through almost every scenario and get out of it in some unexpected way.
- He is a Catalyst for Adventure- Whether it be smuggling illegal seeds through intergalactic security or trying to save the Earth Rick is always on an adventure and is always bringing someone along for the ride. As long as his character is around nothing stays quiet.
- He is Blunt- He says what we are thinking; however, usually through the darkest humor possible.
Edit - He does the Right Thing (most of the time…) - When the adventure takes a wrong turn and the outcome looks dismal Rick does the right thing; going as far as sacrificing his narcissistic self for his grandson.
- He is a bad-ass- Super-genius, rebel, anarchist, and a multiverse traveler. Rick Sanchez shoots first but does not ask questions since he already knows the answer...or just doesn't care. Although we may not want to admit it, he is the person we want to be like when life is getting us down.
In a world where we often times have to censor ourselves in social situations and fall into the same old routine, the character of Rick Sanchez is the dose of adventure that we all wish we could inject into our lives.
