It was Halloween of 2014 when the National Orange Show Event Center hosted the second night of the music festival, Escape: All Hallows Eve. A night where partygoers get all dressed up and shuffle around the venue. As the night was about to end people started heading to the main stage to wait for the event closer. The closer was none other than Steve Aoki. Once he stepped on the stage, ravers started screaming at the top of their lungs and crowds headed toward the front. In Aoki's tradition there is always a person crowd surfing on an inflatable boat and he throws a huge cake at a fan who begs for it. When Aoki closed the event with his final song, it got people pumped up to keep dancing until the music faded away. It was a night I will never forget because Steve Aoki gave me great memories. Something I never knew, however, was where he came from or how he became a DJ. My questions were answered when I watched the Netflix documentary "I'll Sleep When I'm Dead," a film directed by Justin Krook.
The film depicts the life of Steve Aoki and how he started to become a world famous DJ. The documentary contains interviews with famous DJs such as Tiësto and Diplo on their relationship with Aoki. The film catches your attention on how he gets his risk-taking quality from his father. The documentary follows Steve on his tireless adventure from clubs to festivals, radio station interviews, meetings and making music. He shares stories about the relationship he had with his father and how he doubted Steve on the direction he was going towards. He talks about the two people he has loved and lost and how this ultimately motivated him to accomplish his endeavor.
This is one movie I suggest you to watch even if you are not an electronic dance music fan. What I love about the film is the loyalty Aoki had toward his father and how he inspired Steve to become well known to the world. There were happy and emotional moments that get to your heart and the storyline will probably get you thinking to accomplish something for someone you love so much. Have a Netflix account? Check it out, you won't regret it.
