"The Ranch" is a fantastic show now streaming on Netflix starring Ashton Kutcher and Sam Elliot. The Emmy winning sitcom is about an ex-football star Colt (Kutcher) who decides to return home and work on the family ranch. His father Beau (Elliot) just doesn't give a crap about anything. Other stars of the show over the four parts include Danny Masterson, Elisha Cuthbert, and Debra Winger. Despite being in every episode of part four, Danny got fired from the show and will be cut when filming resumes.
SPOILERS AHEAD!
If you haven't seen parts 1-3 please stop reading. When we pick up on "Part Four", we are reminded that Colt and Heather lost their baby. Of course, it was a complete shocker when she announced she was pregnant because he was with Abby.
One of the best scenes in this show was in "Part Four" episode one. Heather and Colt have a deep talk about the miscarriage because Colt is acting like he's fine. It's extremely realistic and raw in my opinion. After having that talk with Heather, Colt realizes he wants to marry Abby. He picks the perfect moment to propose, at a Thomas Rhett meet and greet.
I know I'm not the only one who freaked out when Thomas showed up. "Die A Happy Man" has been stuck in my head for two years. Colt has this idea that he would hold up a sign that says "Abby, will you marry me?" when they take the picture at the meet & greet. However, things don't go as planned and Thomas ends up punching Colt in the face.
Abby and Colt finally get engaged and Colt ponders a new business offer. He wants to buy the Peterson Ranch and who is the fabulous owner?
That's right it's Mr. Red Forman himself! The "That 70's Show" fan in me started screaming when Kurtwood Smith appeared on the screen. He plays a fellow Rancher that is unfortunately dying and selling his ranch. He also calls them "dumbass" and it's extremely satisfying.
Also, guest starring in "Part Four" is Jon Cryer. He plays the bank lawyer that Colt and Rooster try to get a loan from for the Peterson Ranch.
At the same time that Colt brings this idea up, Jen (Maggie Lawson) tells them about a pipeline opportunity. Of course, not everyone is happy about these ideas. Maggie (Winger) even gets arrested protesting the pipeline. Abby knows it's Colt's dream so she gives him all the money for their wedding. All this stress (or all the steak he eats) inevitably gives Beau a heart attack. He is extremely stubborn though and doesn't want to go because he thinks he's going to die.
Before he leaves, Colt tells him he is going to need him to sign documents for the Peterson Ranch but Beau declines and says there will be other ranches. Colt, who doesn't give up, decides to talk to the family lawyer about the situation. He then finds out that Rooster can actually buy the Ranch without Beau's permission. They realize that they will get money from the pipeline plus the money for Abby and Colt's wedding. No problem right? Colt and Rooster buy the Ranch from Peterson, Beau's surgery goes well, and everything seems great. Until Jen shows up and says that they aren't going to do the pipeline because of all the protesters and bad publicity.
So now, Beau is just recovering from a heart attack and he is coming back to a Ranch with no money. Only to find out that his two sons went behind his back to buy a ranch he said he didn't want. Also, Abby left for Denver because she couldn't find another teaching job.
I really loved this season because it showed us a different side of every character. Colt was forced to get emotional because of Heather's miscarriage. Maggie had to look at her mistakes that she made. Rooster was insecure because Jen didn't like him at first and Beau had to admit he was scared. I love the guest stars, and they should just keep taking people from "That 70's Show". Give us some Topher Grace, Mila Kunis, and Laura Prepon.
When "Part Five" picks up, Danny Masterson's character will be phased out. I'm quite interested to see how they will do it because the ranch thing wasn't necessarily his fault.
Regardless, I hope Netflix decides to renew this show. It's one of the best out there.
