A Review Of Video Game Movie Adaptation "Assassin's Creed"
Rikkin
From Fox: "Through a revolutionary technology that unlocks his genetic memories, Callum Lynch (Michael Fassbender) experiences the adventures of his ancestor, Aguilar, in 15th Century Spain. Callum discovers he is descended from a mysterious secret society, the Assassins, and amasses incredible knowledge and skills to take on the oppressive and powerful Templar organization in the present day."

I have never played the Assassin's Creed video games, but they seem to involve playing as the member of this order, trying to accomplish tasks for a great good in the Past.

The movie spends a great deal of its running time in modern times for reasons of explaining what the mysterious organization is looking for and for Callum Lynch (Michael Fassbender). Many times. TOO many times. You learn about the Assassins, their enemies and their goal in an opening title card... and minutes later in the 15th century... and then again in modern times. And the film really couldn't have made me care less about it.

It seems to suffer from not trying to set up a world as much as set up a franchise. World-building and franchise-building are entirely different things. Pushing ideas and mysteries that won't be solved in the film your watching, but in a later movie. Sadly, this situation comes up far too often in movies as of late.

Fassbender, Marion Cotillard, and Jeremy Irons try their best and elevate the exposition heavy dialogue into to something isn't completely heavy-handed. Fassbender get the most interesting part, switching between modern times as Callum and his 15th century past as Aguilar. But Callum & Aguilar's characters are given the most basic of reasons to exist and little to connect with the audience. The opposition is an organization with no strong character to be the face of it, in either the 15th Century or the present, as I don't see Irons' Rikkin standing a chance against Callum.

The movie meanders for the most part, with no great interest sustaining any forward momentum. That is the real crime in an action movie that features so much live stunt work and parkour, and drains the life of it. There is one sequence that wakes the movie up, involving the assassins having to flee through a Spanish city. By far, the high point of the film's action scenes.

Sadly, there's nothing driving the movie forward. Nothing in the story, the characters, and the action sequences have a sense of urgency. So I'm left, as the credits rolled, feeling that, “Well, that was a movie.” This will come across as another failed video game adaption that failed, which is too bad. There was potential here with a stronger creative hand in control.

WORTH PAYING: Afternoon Theater prices... if you are a fan of Assassin's Creed games. Otherwise, when it hits Pay cable channels in a few months..

11 Things Summer Nannies Can Relate To

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

If it hurts now, it'll hurt again. Not because you're gullible or naive, only because you fall fast, hard, and you do it every time.

We fall each and every time with the complete and utter confidence that someone will be there to catch us. Now that person we SWORE we were never going to fall for has our hearts, and every time we see them our palms start sweating. The butterflies in our stomach start to soar and our hearts are entirely too close to bursting out of our chests.

Yes, it IS a sport. Yes, I fall all the time. No, I do not ride in jeans with a cowgirl hat on.

Growing up I have always wanted to own a horse. My grandparents own a well known equestrian facility in Georgia, so I have been riding since I was born. A bond between a person and their horse is a bond so strong that it cannot be broken. Everywhere I went I wanted to be around horses, even forcing my family to go on trail rides during vacations. Horses have been a part of my life for as long as I can remember has taught me great responsibility, as well as 14 things that all equestrians can relate to.

College is super hard. Between working, studying, and having a social life, it feels like a struggle to just keep afloat.

I understand. When you feel like your drowning and there's no way to stay afloat I understand that it feels like everyone else is doing just fine. I understand all the frustration, long nights in the library, and that feeling that you want to just throw in the towel. I understand that sometimes it's too hard to get out of bed because your brain is already filled with too much information to remember. I understand because I am also feeling pretty burnt out.

No Matter How Challenging School Gets, You Have To Put Your Health First — A Degree Won't Mean Anything If You're Dead

Some of the best advice I've ever received was from my social studies teacher in sophomore year of high school. He stated, "If you don't know it at midnight, you're not going to know it for the 8 a.m. exam, so get some sleep."

It's such a simple piece of advice, but it holds so much accuracy and it's something that the majority of college students need to hear and listen to. "All-nighters" are a commonality on college campuses in order to cram in studying for an exam that is typically the next day.
