If you loved Glee, and are really missing it, then boy do I got a show for you. Airing Tuesdays at 9 on NBC, "Rise" is the newest show to tug at our heartstrings. It tells the story of a High School English teacher who decides to take over the drama program. He wants to push new, more controversial shows into the theater, and wants to make something special.
Well, even from the first episode, I can tell that this show truly is something extraordinary. Josh Radnor plays Lou Mazzuchelli, the English/Drama Teacher. He is just perfect for this role, and it definitely reminds me a lot of Mr.Schue from Glee. The difference is, however, "Mr.Mazzu" is turning this plain drama program into something amazing. The students are putting on the show "Spring Awakening", which is very heavy and deals with problems such as teen pregnancy, abortion, and teen suicide, among others. It's great how he's getting the students out of their comfort zones, and putting a show on that has to do with real life topics. Radnor is a great main character, and I can't wait to see more of his life in this upcoming season.
If you've seen Moana (I'm sure you have), you might know Auli'i Cravalho. She voices Moana, but all I can think about is her character Lillette Suarez. Raised by a single mom, Lillette tries out for the drama club with her best friend Simon, and obtains the lead role of Wendla. Okay, so I don't want to spoil anything, but her character is just so strong and inspiring. Her voice is amazing, and I can't wait to hear her sing more of Wendla's songs.
I'm obsessed with the kids in the drama club. My favorite is Simon, played by Ted Sutherland, who is raised in a conservative family. His Mom is played by Stephanie J. Block, a Broadway veteran, who is such a great actress. Simon is best friends with Lillette, and it's interesting to see how he interacts with the other kids. He's also such a great singer.
At first, I didn't like Gwen at all. Played by Amy Forsyth, she's the star of the drama club whose goal is to get the biggest role possible. Her family life is complicated, and she's trying to find herself in all of this. In one of the recent episodes, she sang a song from Spring Awakening that was just phenomenal. As the episodes have gone on, Gwen is starting to grow on me. I can see that her mother is running her life, and I hope to see her take control of her own life.
I love how this show shows a family coming together. Drama club is a place to express oneself, and this is just that. I feel like I'm experiencing this show with these kids, and that is a really special thing to have. I look forward to seeing this show every week, and every week it's always amazing. This show is going to blast off, and everyone needs to be with it at the beginning.
Rise is something extraordinary, and you should watch it every week on NBC!
