Miley Cyrus has gone through her fair share of phases over the years, starting with her country roots which slowly faded as her rebel hip-hop phase took over. Miley always seems to have a very distinct image that she likes to portray of herself. The American singer/ songwriter got her start at an early age from her father who was a very famous country artist back in his day. Miley got into entertainment as “Miley Stewart” on her Disney Channel show “Hannah Montana”, and from there, her career as a pop-country artist took off big time.
Miley has released several studio albums over the past few years all with different styles including Meet Miley Cyrus (2007), Breakout (2008), Can't Be Tamed(2010), Bangerz (2013), and Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz (2015).Miley’s most recent album, “Younger Now” seemed to have brought back her country roots, and stray away from mainstream hip-hop sounds and lyrics. This album has several songs that I enjoyed, but there were also a few that seemed forced and not catchy. I don’t think that she was necessarily going for an album with songs that you play at a party or anything like that, but more of a slow vibe with meaningful lyrics. I liked that message that she was trying to express throughout the album, touching on how her life has changed, relationships, and who she is now.
My favorite song on the album is the second track, “Malibu”, because not only is the instrumental catchy but the message is relatable to anyone who has a destination in their life that they want to arrive at one day. Miley talks about how she never thought that she would be where she is today, which we all think to ourselves at times. How did I get here? What paths did I take to lead me to where I am right now? These are some of thoughts Miley most likely had as she was putting together her thoughts on this song and album. I also liked “Rainbowland”, it is a good sing-along song, and definitely brings back her country roots, it even has a feature from Dolly Parton. “Week without you” is another track I enjoyed. In this song she talks about not having stress, having fun, and enjoying life.These songs, I feel, will be the biggest songs off the album, because they are catchy with relatable messages and good beats.
Overall I would give this album a 6.5. I listened to this album with a completely open mind, considering I have not listened to any of Miley’s music in a long time. I really felt like I was listening to circa 2007 Miley, which is not a bad thing, but seemed like it was outdated. There were several songs I enjoyed a lot, a few that were neither here nor there, and a few that I straight up did not like. If you are a big Miley fan than you most likely have more of an interest in her sound then I do, which leads to different opinions. In general, not a bad album, I would recommend giving the songs I mentioned a listen, and the rest of the album as well.
