I, an avid follower of the English royal family, absolutely love this show. I just got done watching the second season of the show and just like the first, it didn't disappoint.
To those who may live under a rock or to those who haven't watched it yet, it's based on the life of Queen Elizabeth and the seniors of the royal family back in the 40s, 50s, and 60s that incorporate the political and personal aspects of the family. Of course, most the historical content that happens in the show did really happen, but it obviously is dramatized. Since there are many strict protocols in relation to the royal family, the personal content that is on the show was most likely made up or dramatized by those who may have had first-hand insight. Consequently, this show does give you a feel of what it may be like to be a Queen, sister, mother, wife, and friend. I wouldn't trade places with her for a million bucks, but, I do want to go over a few things I enjoyed about this second season and a few things that just didn't settle well.
Caution: if you plan on watching the series, spoilers are ahead!
Content I enjoyed:
Throughout the first season and the majority of the second season, the producers very much highlighted marriage and relationship struggles between the Queen and Prince Phillip. I think this is an important point to cover in such a strict and uptight characteristic show. This allows for vulnerability and a new perspective in the life of the Queen.
I like that this season gave personal experiences because it does bring in a new audience that wouldn't normally watch this type of genre of television. Those who understand relationship problems or who have had been separated from their significant other for a long amount of time will relate to the Queen in that aspect. In these vulnerable scenes, not once did you see the Queen break her composure until the very last episode. She is a person too, under the crown and jewels, that is.
I loved that they covered Prince Phillips background this season too. I knew Phillip was a Prince of Greece, but never would I have thought that he had any ties to the German Nazi's or that he went to an all-boys school where he learned to be the person he grew into. For starters, they touched base on Phillip's background because both the Queen and Prince Phillip decided to put their eldest son, Charles into the same school as Phillip attended when he was young.
Charles ended up having a hard time transitioning, just as Phillip did because of their position in their royal families. In the midst of a flashback, Phillip's sister ended up marrying a man who was a higher up in the horrid Nazi group. This isn't the first time the royal family had any ties with this group, but it just puts this time period into perspective. Phillip grew to marry the Queen of England and with all of this under his belt. It was a breath of fresh air to learn about the man who stands by the queen.
As just mentioned, Prince Phillip wasn't the only one who had ties to Germany in the 1940s. In the first season, there is a clear historical content of Duke of Windsor abdicating the throne for numerous reasons. In this season, he ends up coming to the Queen and asking for forgiveness in order to gain the spotlight in the family again, but the Queen ends up getting a hold of old WWII letters from Duke of Windsor and Hitler's private secretary indicating foreign relations between the two.
These letters promised of peace and other promising circumstances to benefit both parties. It was crazy to learn about this since I didn't have any idea of this what so ever. I also loved that at the end of the episode, it showed real pictures of Duke of Windsor and his wife meeting with Nazi leaders and Hitler. So much would be different if he remained king.
Content I didn't enjoy:
There were a few episodes that incorporated Princess Margaret's story as well. Even though I did like learning about her personality, and ability to be whatever, and whoever she wanted, in contrast to Queen Elizabeth, it just seemed to be a filler in the season. It neither hinted at any historical relevance, other than her marriage, or any importance to the progression of the show.
In addition, in one episode, there was criticism of how Queen Elizabeth's speeches were being delivered and what content she was delivering. It was deemed quite traditional and that there needed to add a more personable quality to it. I respect that since it gave indication on why she now does televised Christmas speeches; but it was also a filler and didn't set up anything else for the show.
Also, episode 8 in the season introduced Mr. and Mrs. Kennedy's visit to the palace. I liked the historical significance, since the Queen has seen and met with 12 U.S. Presidents while being on the throne. There was something missing within the episode, however, that could have been more dramatized but nonetheless, it did give a bit of progression of the rest of the show. This was the turning point of Elizabeth and Phillip's relationship. I guess I just don't understand why they would incorporate the Kenndy's visit and not any other president's visits.
Nonetheless, I am completely obsessed with this show, and I really hope they go on with a few more seasons, or until Charles is older and ends up marrying Princess Diana. That would be sufficient enough for me! I'm ready for you Season 3.
