A Reminder Of Who You Are

For when life gets in the way of the truth.

A Reminder Of Who You Are
Kristina Hamilton

This is a reminder of who you are for when your eyes feel heavy from weariness, when your arms feel weak from loneliness. A reminder for when you are full of joy, when you are smiling, when laughter fills your lungs. A reminder for when you need encouragement, when you feel like you are not enough. A reminder to mend your broken heart and heal your open wounds; a reminder to still your raging storms and bring peace over what you cannot control:

You were made by the God who cradles the stars in his hands, the one who commands the wind to be still and who paints the sunset across the horizon each night. The one who fills even the depths of the ocean with beauty, and who vastly decorates the fields with the splendor of spring each year. You are the object of his affection; a million galaxies could never compare to the magnitude of his love for you, and the glory of the sun as it rises each morning could never outshine the grace he has for you.

You are not your pain, your brokenness, your shame, and your shortcomings. You are a child of God. You are more than enough. There is nothing you could ever do that would cause him to look at you with anything less than compassion and love. The creator of all things, who has everything in control, chose you and cares for you immensely. He is waiting for you to choose him and find your identity in him.

According to Scripture:

  • You were created in God’s own image. (Genesis 1:27)
  • God will fight for you. (Exodus 14:14)
  • God is on your side, you need not fear. (Psalms 118:6)
  • God is with you and will strengthen you. (Isaiah 41:10)
  • You are redeemed. (Isaiah 44:22)
  • You are known by God. (Jeremiah 1:5)
  • God will take care of you, you need not worry. (Matthew 6:25-33)
  • Your sin is overcome by God’s grace. (Romans 6:14)
  • Nothing can separate you from God’s love. (Romans 8:38-39)
  • God is rich in mercy and loves you deeply. (Ephesians 2:4)
  • You are a child of God. (1 John 3:1)

I encourage you to turn to these truths and read them word for word. Read them and repeat them and know them until they echo in the place in your heart that tries to convince you otherwise. Let them resonate and overflow into every part of you that carries pain and feels broken. Let them destroy every one of your doubts with a resounding, "I am a child of God."

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
