For better or worse, 2017 is ending and 2018 is on its way. A new year gives everyone a chance to reflect on their choices, decisions, and beliefs and see how much the past year has changed them. 2018 is another opportunity for us all to grow, and we need to keep these 18 things in mind when starting our new year off.

1. We're all still learning.

No one is perfect and a new year doesn't mean we suddenly have all of the answers. Everyone has things they are working on and the best thing to do is recognize what yours is and never stop pushing.

2. There is no such thing as having control over your life.

The people who seem like they have everything figured out don't. The adults we once thought as kids who had their lives sorted out are slowly becoming us and we're realizing they're just faking it until they make it too. Life throws too many curveballs for you to expect you know exactly what's coming.

3. Communication will save you pain.

If you're upset about something, say so. If you're scared about something, say so. You will save so much time and pain if you are honest and open with what's inside.

4. You learn more when you stop talking.

The best way to find out what you don't know is to listen to the people around you, listen to views that are not your own.

5. Company is the best medicine when all you want is to be alone.

6. You can make resolutions whenever.

New year, new me. But if you want a new you in four months? That's allowed too. Keep moving forward.

7. You don't know when it's your last chance to love someone.

Love the people you have before you don't have them anymore.

8. Naps are wonderful things.

Sleep is healthy. Do it during the day too.

9. You are not weak just because you don't feel strong.

10. The right music can fix almost any bad day.

Get some recommendations from friends or listen to some throwbacks. It's the best way to not feel alone with your feelings and forget about them at the same time.

11. Support what you believe.

Do your research. Keep the people around you educated. If there is something you're passionate about, be passionate about it.

12. The outdoors have a lot to offer.

It's easy to underestimate what an hour in the fresh air looking at the stars can do for you. Remember there is so much more to the world than what's dragging you down.

13. Someone needs you.

Someone will always need you.

14. The best nights aren't planned.

Even if you're wrapped up in bed with four new episodes of Netflix ready to fill the rest of your night, don't ignore the text from your friend asking to grab food. Chances are nights like those end up being the best stories.

15. It's never too late to apologize.

16. If having a cookie is going to make you feel better, eat the cookie.

Same goes for that slice of pizza or an order of zilly fries. Just do it.

17. If you're comfortable, something's wrong.

There is always something coming next, always something to do. It's good to take some moments and relax but if you think everything is in order, there's a big storm coming.

18. You come first.

Putting others first is one of the best qualities you can have, but at the end of the day you have to live your life so you need to make the choices that are best for you.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.
