Religious Intolerance: The Root Of All Evil

While most religious people are not bad, the vocal minority is making religion the root of all evil today.

Religious Intolerance: The Root Of All Evil
Paul M. Walsh

I have nothing against being religious. In fact, I am spiritual myself. However, religion as it is practiced today is the root of all the world's problems. It is not just Islam. It is Christianity too. Let me be clear: It is not being religious that is the problem. It is the actions of some religious people that is the problem. And, unfortunately, these people are doing terrible things in the name of whatever religion they happen to believe in. In short, religion today is widely used as an excuse for violent action. This is a problem.

There are some Muslims who have done terrible things in the name of Islam. They have killed many innocent people. These people, I dare say, are Muslim extremists. Are all Muslims terrorists? No, and I am completely against any action at all that targets Muslims. However, there are some Muslims who are terrorists and extremists. That is a fact. Liberals hate the term "Muslim extremist." But they exist. These people kill because they believe those who are different deserve to die. The Middle East is in constant war because some groups thing that anybody who does not believe in the same things they do should die. Religion is creating this problem.

Christianity is far from innocent. Look as far back as the crusades. Christians killed thousands and thousands of people just because they believed in a different God, multiple gods, or no God at all. The KKK? They acted in the name of Christianity. And today, Christians all over the world want to ban Muslims from entering their country because they might be terrorists. This is contributing to the problem. This is the same thing as saying "uh oh, you are a Muslim. I would let you in and care for you if you were like me, but you believe in killing others and your religion is wrong." Some politicians have even called President Obama a Muslim as an INSULT. Is it not contributing to a violent society to use different beliefs as an insult?

The clash between Islam and Christianity is the single biggest source of conflict in today's world. That cannot be debated. Practicing either religion is not wrong. What is wrong as that Muslims think that practicing Christianity is wrong and vice versa. The problem is that some religious people feel the need to hate everybody who does not believe in what they do. The problem is that religion today is often used as an excuse for terror, war, fear, and even as insults. Are all religious people like that? Of course not. But religion as a whole is the source of every global war happening right now. This needs to change. People need to stop preaching their religion to those who do not want to be preached to. People need to classify others not by their religion but by their contribution to society. People need to accept that not everybody believes in what they do. People need to stop judging others because of their faith. Religion is scary as it is often used today, and it is up to the majority of religious people who are not like that to change that. The minority of religious people, the extremists, are the major voices of religion today, and that needs to change. It is time for acceptance to become a root of religious practice.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
